Warriors Drop Series Finale at Lake Erie

Kyle Zimmerman drove in two runs in the ninth inning but comeback attempt falls short.

Box Score

PAINESVILLE, Ohio -- Winners of 15 of its last 17 games the Wayne State University baseball team (31-12, 19-8 GLIAC) dropped Sunday's contest at Lake Erie (26-17, 20-9 GLIAC) 6-5 to end its winning streak at five games. A late inning rally fell just short as WSU scored two runs in the ninth inning to pull within a run but were unable to tie the game.

Heading into the final week of the regular season, the Green & Gold have the most wins in the GLIAC and are percentage points behind Grand Valley State for first-place.

Both teams went scoreless after three innings as starter David Frederick (Rockford, Mich. / Northview) (3-3) was solid to begin the series finale.

However, five hits and two Warriors errors put six runs on the board for the Storm in the bottom of the fourth inning to break the scoreless tie. In the process, Lake Erie knocked Frederick out of the game as WSU went with Chris Horvath (Windsor, Ont. / St. Anne Catholic) out of the bullpen.

Following a one-out walk and a double from Griffin Harms (Bingham Farms, Mich. / Birmingham Groves), a sacrifice fly from Jeremy Carrell (St. Clair, Mich.) got the Warriors on the board in the top of the fifth inning.

Following back-to-back singles, Eric Cunningham (LaSalle, Ont. / St. Thomas of Villanova) pulled the Warriors within 6-2 with a sacrifice fly to right field in the top of the eighth inning. Chris Gebara (Troy, Mich.) collected an RBI with a single up the middle to continue WSU's rally and advanced to second on a fielding error charged to the Storm's center fielder.

Horvath kept the Storm quiet in the bottom of the eighth inning to give WSU a chance in the top of the ninth.

Lake Erie issued back-to-back walks to begin the inning and eventually loaded the bases with a two-out walk to Cunningham. Kyle Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich.) doubled home two runs to cut the deficit to a run. However, Lake Erie was able to get Gebara to foul out to first base to avoid the sweep.

The Warriors will travel to Tiffin on Wednesday for a single, nine-inning game beginning at 2 PM.
