Comeback Falls Short for Baseball

The Warriors scored two runs in the ninth inning but lost 6-4 on Monday.

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- The Wayne State University baseball program (1-2 overall) finished a season-opening three-game series against Kentucky Wesleyan (4-4 overall) on Monday afternoon and the Panthers would win 6-4 to take the series.  WSU scored three runs in the final three innings but the comeback effort ran out of steam.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Warriors put two runners on to begin the game in the top of the first inning as Ryan Mergener (Portage, Mich. / Portage Central) and JT Conti (Trenton, Mich.) notched singles but were left stranded.  The Panthers answered with three hits and two runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead against WSU starter Tyler Waldrop (Grand Ledge, Mich.) (0-1).  Patrick Adams (Detroit, Mich. / De La Salle) doubled with one out in the top of the second inning but would make it no further.

- After a leadoff walk to Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) to begin the fifth inning, Devin Rose (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Orchard Lake St. Mary's) doubled down the right field line to plate WSU's first run of the game and trim the deficit to one.  The Panthers regained their two-run lead with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning and added another with a sacrifice fly to stretch KWC's lead to 4-1.

- Two errors allowed Rose to reach third base and he later scored on a sac fly from Conti to pull WSU within two, 4-2, in the top of the seventh inning.  KWC was quick to respond, scoring two runs on a double in the bottom of the seventh inning.  WSU was unable to create any offense in the eighth but scored twice in the top of ninth.  With one on and two outs Jack Schmidt (Fishers, Ind. / Indianapolis Cathedral) doubled to right center and Conti followed with another double to bring WSU within two, 6-4.  However, the comeback efforts ran out of time as KWC got the out it needed to end the game.

AT THE PLATE
- Conti posted his third multiple-hit game of the season, going 2-for-4 with three RBI.  Rose and Adams both collected two hits as well.

ON THE MOUND
- Waldrop allowed three earned runs on eight hits over five and 1/3 innings, while striking out three batters.  Brendan Wetmore (Westland, Mich. / John Glenn) pitched an inning and a 1/3, allowing three earned runs and Dillon McInerny (Richmond, Mich.) made his collegiate debut, tossing an inning and a 1/3 of scoreless baseball, collecting his first strikeout.

UP NEXT
- Wayne State will conclude the RussMatt Invitational with a doubleheader against Gannon on Tuesday.  First pitch is set for 9:00 a.m.
