Men's Basketball Drops Third Overtime Game of the Season

Warriors fall 101-97 to visiting Saginaw Valley State.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball program (3-11 overall, 3-7 GLIAC) played another tight contest on Saturday afternoon and fell 101-97 in overtime to Saginaw Valley State (6-11 overall, 3-7 GLIAC).  WSU has played overtime games in three of its last four contests and the Warriors have lost their last four games by a total of 14 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
A baseline jumper from Tristan Wilson (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Skyline) accounted for the first two points of the game to give WSU an early first-half lead.  Darian Owens-White (Ypsilanti, Mich. / River Rouge) followed with a steal and a lay-up, then a triple to stretch the early advantage to 7-0 at the 18:20 mark.  Another three-pointer from Owens-White made it 12-9 with 16:16 to play in the stanza.  The teams traded leads until a second-chance basket from Karim Murray (Detroit, Mich. / Western International) gave the Warriors an 18-15 lead with 12:37 left before halftime.  Latin Davis, Jr. (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Milan) connected from deep to extend the home lead to 23-15 at the 11:37 mark.  Another trey by Davis gave the Green & Gold a 30-23 lead with nine minutes left to play.  WSU's fifth triple of the contest came from Owens-White as Wayne State led 33-26 at the 7:17 mark.  Marquel Ingram (Detroit, Mich. / Pershing) connected on his first field goal of the season, a three-pointer, giving WSU a 40-32 lead with 4:33 remaining left before halftime.  A fast-break slam from Wilson stretched the home margin to 10 (42-32) and back-to-back triples from Owens-White and Davis gave the Warriors a 48-39 advantage at the 1:48 mark.  Davis ended his impressive half with consecutive layups, including one as time expired, finishing the period with 19 points.  Wayne State entered the locker room with a 52-44 lead.

Back-to-back WSU buckets from Wilson to begin the second half staked the Warriors to a 56-46 lead at the 18:55 mark.  However, SVSU kept it close with a quick 11-6 rally and trailed 62-57 with 15:36 to play.  Three straight baskets from Javon Henderson (Detroit, Mich. / University Prep) stretched the home advantage to 68-57 at the 12:22 mark.  A driving bucket from Xavier Cochran (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) gave WSU a 73-65 lead with 9:17 to play.  The Cardinals pulled within three, 73-70, after two free throws from Myles Belyeu with 7:16 left in the game.  The home lead shrunk to two after a basket by James Toohey at the 5:14 mark.  Timothy Huguley (Detroit, Mich. / Old Redford Academy) connected twice from the charity stripe to return the WSU lead to four (77-73) with just over five minutes remaining.  Wayne State led 79-73 at the arrival of the final media timeout of the day.  Toohey trimmed the deficit to one, 79-78, with a triple at the 3:25 mark.  SVSU's Avery Lewis missed a pair of free throws and WSU responded with a layup from Davis to give the home team an 81-78 lead.  Cochran pushed the margin to three, 83-80, with a cutting basket with 1:56 to play.  With 1:16 to play, Owens-White stole the ball, which led to a layup from Davis which extended the home lead to 85-80.  WSU had the ball and an 85-82 lead with 30 seconds remaining, but SVSU collected a defensive rebound after a missed Owens-White jumper.  On the Cards' final possession, Darnell Hoskins, Jr. drilled a deep three-pointer to tie the game at 85-85.  The Warriors were unable to make anything happen with one second left as 40 minutes proved not to be enough.

Davis scored the first points of overtime and Toohey answered with a triple to give SVSU its first lead, 88-87, since a 13-12 lead early in the contest.  Another driving layup from Davis brought WSU within one, 90-89, with 3:16 to play.  Toohey stayed hot and connected from behind the arc for the seventh time to give the Cards a 93-89 lead at the 2:40 mark.  Two Murray free throws cut the visitors lead to 93-91 at the 2:19 mark, but the WSU defense was unable to find the stop it needed on the other end of the court.  Wayne State trailed 95-92 after Henderson connected on one-of-two free throws with 1:34 left to play.  WSU trailed 97-94 with 16 seconds left to play after a layup from Davis.  Two SVSU free throws gave the Cards a 99-94 lead and the visitors would go on to win 101-97.
