Volleyball Earns Saturday Sweep

Wayne State cruised past Purdue Northwest 3-0 to improve to 4-3 in the GLIAC.

WESTVILLE, Ind. -- The Wayne State University volleyball team (9-6 overall, 4-3 GLIAC) swept Purdue Northwest (1-14, 0-7 GLIAC) on Saturday to avoid a three-match losing streak.  The Warriors hit .323 and won by scores of 25-16, 25-17 and 25-18.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Wayne State led the opening set 5-1 after a service ace from Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) and a kill from Ellie Rodriguez (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Catholic Central) pushed the advantage to 8-4.  A kill from Hailey Richardson (New Boston, Mich. / Huron) doubled up the Pride at 14-7 and another ace from Haley Tenelshof (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Jenison) gave the visitors a 20-12 lead.  WSU would win 25-16 to go up 1-0 in the match.

The momentum stayed with the Green & Gold in the second set after a PNW service error gave the Warriors a 5-3 advantage.  A point from Grace Frazee (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) made it 8-6 and consecutive kills by Richardson extended the margin to 12-7.  Taylor Wagner (St. Joseph, Mich. / Lakeshore), Richardson and Madleyn Krenz (Chenoa, Ill. / Prairie Central) collected kills down the stretch as Wayne State won 25-17.

Duffield served up another ace as WSU led 6-3 to begin the third set.  The advantage grew to 11-5 after a kill from Wagner and a block by Wagner and Frazee.  A 6-1 run by the Warriors pushed the lead to 18-9 but the Pride would keep it close near the end of the game, trailing 22-17.  Wayne State won three of the final four points, including two kills by Richardson, to win 25-18 and complete the sweep.
