DETROIT -- The fourth-ranked Wayne State University softball squad (24-7 overall, 2-2 GLIAC) completed its home opening day with a
3-0 triumph over Hillsdale College (6-12, 1-5) in the second game of league twinbill on Friday.
For the 19th time this season the Warriors scored first (19-0) with a single run in the top of the second. Sophomore first baseman
Becca Ryan (Westland, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) had a leadoff double to right center. Senior left fielder
Stephanie LeClair (Kitchener, Ont. / Forest Heights C.I.) advanced Ryan to third with a sacrifice bunt. After fouling off a 2-2 offering from Charger hurler Laura Homan, WSU catcher
Brittany Omelanchuk (Brooklin, Ont. / Wilson S.S.) plated Ryan with a sacrifice fly.
WSU starter
Nicole Abel (Kitchener, Ont. / St. Mary's) stranded one runner in the top of the first after single, caught stealing and a walk. In the second, an HC threat with two on and one out ended as shortstop
Jaci Banton (Richmond Hill, Ont. / Cardinal Carter) caught a line drive going to her right and threw back to second to double off a runner.
In the bottom of the fourth, Hillsdale had back-to-back singles by Jennifer Berlet and Jessica Guertin prompting a WSU pitching change.
Casey Hanes (Richmond, Va. / Douglas Freeman) recorded consecutive outs on a force play at third and a line drive to second baseman #Lauren Histed (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica). Following a walk which loaded the bases, Hanes struck out Charger shortstop Kate Hoop looking on a 1-2 offering.
The Warrior offense struck for two runs in the top of the fifth. Junior
Rachel Spaccarotelli (Ray, Mich. / Romeo) had a one-out single, and following a fielder's choice, sophomore right fielder
Alison Allen (Redford, Mich. / Farmington Hills Mercy) reached on an infield single. A fielding error loaded the bases, and sophomore third baseman
Rebecca Stanley (Waterloo, Ont. / Waterloo C.I.) delivered a two-run single up the middle.
Despite being limited to three hits, Hillsdale stranded eight runners as they were the recipients of five walks and a hit by pitch.
Hanes (19-3) earned the win in relief by tossing four hitless innings. Abel did not allow a run in three innings thanks to Hanes' relief work.
Allen and Stanley each had two hits in the contest, with Stanley's two-run single being a key hit.
Hanes is 25th in NCAA Division II history with 891 innings pitched, tied-for-17th with 103 victories and 22nd in strikeouts with 963.
The Warriors will host the Findlay Oilers for a Saturday GLIAC doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
