BoxscoreDETROIT - The Wayne State University women's tennis team picked up their first win of the season Friday afternoon defeating Ashland University, 8-1. This is the ninth straight season that the Warriors have led the season off with a win.
Wayne State (1-0) took a 3-0 lead over the Eagles (0-1) after the three doubles matches.
The No. 1 doubles team of
Anne Li Briand (Repentigny, Que. / École Secondaire Félix-Leclerc) and
Yahsha Moore (West Bloomfield, Mich. / West Bloomfield) defeated Ashland's Martina Boca and Daniela Alves 8-3.
Andreea Mitrache (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Cousino) and
Alex Poissant (Laval, Que. / Vanier Prep) of the No. 2 doubles duo walked away with an 8-2 victory over Ashland's Meghann Fitpatrick and Kendal Stephens. WSU's No. 3 doubles team of
Ashley Walker (Canton, Mich. / Salem) and
Julia Kamenko (Toronto, Ont. / Vaughan) won 8-3 against Ashland's Andrea Ruiz and Sally Trout.
Briand at No. 4 singles, Kamenko at fifth singles, and
Lauren Hughes (Detroit, Mich. / Southfield) at No. 6 singles, were all 6-0, 6-0 winners.
Moore was victorious at No. 1 singles, winning 6-2, 6-3. Mitrache earned a 6-1, 6-0 win at second singles.
Ashland's lone point came at No. 3 singles as Meghann Fitpatrick defeated Poissant 1-6, 6-0, 10-7.
Wayne State continues its season-opening five-game road trip at Ohio Dominican on Saturday at 10 a.m.
