Box Score 2 The Malone University softball team (10-24-1, 2-18 GLIAC) suffered a pair of run-rule losses to Saginaw Valley State University (MI) (22-6, 14-3 GLIAC) on Saturday, 10-2 and 12-4.
After the Cardinals jumped out to a 3-0 lead in game one, the Pioneers clawed back to 3-2 with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Freshman
Mikayla Fowler ignited the rally with a sharp single to right field. She would come around to score on sophomore
Alexa Holztrager's double to left center. After a single from sophomore
Emily Isla advanced Holztrager to third, sophomore
Desi Hengoed ripped a ground ball through the first baseman's wickets to bring the score to 3-2.
That would be as close as the Pioneers would get as Saginaw added three runs in the third and four runs in the fourth to seal the 10-2 victory after five innings.
Junior
Stephanie Byrne (3-13) picked up the loss yielding six earned runs in three innings. Isla led Malone with two hits.
The Cardinals jumped out to a 6-1 lead through four innings in the second matchup of the doubleheader before the pesky Pioneers fought their way back into the game with a three-spot in the top of the fifth inning to pull within 6-4. Freshman
Allison Mercado's two-run single was the catalyst for the inning.
After Saginaw Valley tacked on two in the bottom of the fifth, the Pioneers once again threatened. However, with two outs and the bases loaded, Isla was rung up looking by the home plate umpire to end the inning. The Cardinals then scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to bring about the game's completion after six innings with the score reading Saginaw Valley State 12 and Malone 4.
Junior
Jillian Coyle dropped to 7-11 on the season, pitching 4 and 1/3 innings. Of the eight runs she gave up, only three were earned. Holztrager and Mercado recorded two hits apiece, combining to register four of Malone's five for the game.
The Pioneers will take a break from GLIAC play when they welcome Michigan-Dearborn to Canton for a doubleheader Tuesday, April 22
nd, starting at 3:00 pm.
