Women's Basketball Handles D'Youville 86-67 for Sixth Straight Win

Fugate scored a game-best 20 points in the victory.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (6-1 overall) won its sixth straight game on Sunday afternoon by defeating D'Youville University (2-5 overall, 1-0 ECC) 86-67 at the Wayne State Fieldhouse. The last winning streak of six games for the Warriors came between November 9 and December 5, 2019, in which WSU posted consecutive wins over Lake Erie, Central State (Ohio), Findlay, Wright State-Lake, Tiffin, and Ferris State during the 2019-20 campaign.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The two teams exchanged the lead three times over the opening two minutes, with jumpers by Sofie Fuglsang and Brianne Moxley answered by a three-pointer from redshirt senior Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) and a layup from sophomore forward Taylor Thompson (Grand Blanc, Mich.).  WSU's lead would grow to eight (12-4) by the media timeout, and to 11 (15-4) following another Fugate triple.  The final 3:06 saw the Green and Gold outscore DYU 10-4 to obtain a 14-point edge (25-11) after 10 minutes.  Fugate's nine points and sophomore forward Gabi Lutchka's (Grass Lake, Mich.) seven contributed 16 of the squad's 25 points (64 percent) in the first stanza.

Second Quarter
WSU outscored the Saints by four (23-19) in the second quarter.  The Warriors doubled up the visitors (32-16) following another Fugate three-pointer three minutes into the period.  D'Youville cut the deficit to 10 (32-22) with a pair of triples by Fuglsang and Kayla Creighton, but that would be as close as the Saints would come before halftime.  Wayne State went on a 10-0 run between 6:31 and 4:53, with Fugate and junior guard Alyssa Leister (St. Louis, Mich. / Alma) providing made three-pointers in the stretch.  The Green and Gold led by 18 (48-30) at intermission, while shooting 63 percent (19-of-30) from the field.

Third Quarter
48 points were tallied in the opening 10 minutes of the second half, which was the most in any quarter for the game.  By the third quarter media break, the hosts held a 20-point advantage (65-45).  Wayne State outpaced DYU 11-5 over the final 3:31.  Lutchka added eight points in that stretch as she drilled a pair of triples in the span of 38 seconds from 1:45 to 1:07, which helped WSU lead 76-50 after the third quarter.

Fourth Quarter
Despite the Saints outscoring the Warriors 17-10 in the final 10 minutes, Wayne State coasted to a 19-point victory.  Freshman guard McKenna Ferguson (Grandville, Mich. / Byron Center) notched a layup and made the subsequent free throw for the old-fashioned three-point play, which put WSU to 80 points for a third contest this season.  The Warriors did not score for over three-minutes following the Ferguson play, but a pair of made jump shots from Thompson and a free throw by junior forward Ally Shagena (Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) in the game's final minutes helped WSU coast to the triumph.

TEAM STATS
Wayne State put together its best shooting performance of the season, going 35-of-59 from the field (59 percent).  D'Youville made 43 percent (24-of-56) of its attempts from the floor.  Both teams performed well from three-point range, as the Warriors were 11-of-20 (55 percent) and the Saints 9-of-18 (50 percent).  After just two free throws the entire first half (both by WSU), the Green and Gold attempted only seven shots from the charity stripe and made five (71 percent).  DYU went to the line 16 times and made 10 (63 percent).  Wayne State had more rebounds (32-27) and assists (20-17), while D'Youville earned more steals (14-9).  Both squads blocked one shot.
