WSU finishes opening weekend with 4-2 record.

Decatur, Ala. -- The 20th-ranked Wayne State University softball squad (4-2 overall) concluded play in the 2010 Decatur Chillout by defeating fifth-ranked Indianapolis (2-3) 3-1 on Sunday afternoon.

The Warriors had two base runners in the top of the first but were unable to score off All-American hurler Megan Russell.

WSU senior pitcher Casey Hanes (Richmond, Va. / Douglas Freeman) was just as effective.  After Greyhound leadoff batter Jamie Keltz singled, she advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a passed ball.  Hanes retired the next two UI batters on a strikeout and line out to end the frame.

Redshirt freshman catcher Brittany Omelanchuk (Brooklin, Ont. / Wilson S.S.) singled leading off the second but could not advance to second base.

Carmen Martinez led off the bottom of the second for UI with a base hit and stole second after back-to-back strikeouts but was stranded in scoring position.

The Warriors loaded the bases in the third on three consecutive singles by sophomore Lauren Histed (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica), sophomore Alison Allen (Redford, Mich. / Farmington Hills Mercy) and senior Jaci Banton (Richmond Hill, Ont. / Cardinal Carter).  A fielder's choice and double play ended the frame keeping the game scoreless.

After Omelanchuk was stranded in the fourth after a leadoff single, the Greyhounds loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning on a double by Russell, a walk and a hit by pitch, but Hanes recorded the final out on a swinging third strike.

UIndy loaded the bases again in the fifth on a two-out triple, a walk and a hit by pitch, but Martinez ended the inning with a fielder's choice.

Wayne State would end the scoreless drought in the top of the sixth.  Sophomore Becca Ryan (Westland, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) tripled to right center with one out and scored on a single by Omelanchuk.  After a single by freshman Steph Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston), and a ground out, pinch-hitter Sam Cain (Taylor, Mich. / Kennedy) walked to load the bases.  Pinch-hitter Kristina Susalla (Garden City, Mich.) recorded a two-run single through the left side plating both Foreman and Omelanchuk.

Indianapolis had a two-out single in the sixth and loaded the bases again in the seventh.  A one-out single preceded a fielder's choice where the umpire ruled the runner had not been tagged.  A hit by pitch and a single by Martinez made it 3-1.  Hanes settled down to record a pop out and a fly out to end the contest.

Hanes (3-1) struck out 10 and walked two while allowing one earned run.  Russell recorded four strikeouts and one walk while surrendering 11 hits and three earned runs.

Omelanchuk went 3-for-3 with an RBI, while both Allen and Banton had two hits apiece.

Wayne State will travel to Salisbury, N.C. next week for the Catawba Tournament. The Warriors will play East Stroudsburg and Armstrong Atlantic on Friday.
