AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- The Wayne State University baseball team (6-5) was unable to hold onto an early lead against West Chester (4-2), dropping a 5-3 game on Sunday in the first action of the Spring Break trip. WSU will play seven total games in Florida as part of the RussMatt Invitational.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams were quiet during the first three innings.
Sean Winkelseth (Ypsilanti, Mich.) and
Brad Baldwin (Troy, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic) started the bottom of the fourth inning with a single and a double, respectively. Later in the frame,
Justin Kelly (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South) put the Warriors on the board with an RBI double down the right field line. Following a
Ryan Mergener (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Portage Central) double and a sacrifice bunt from
Jeremy Carrell (St. Clair, Mich.),
Justin Sherman (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer) gave WSU a 2-0 lead with an RBI single in the fifth inning.
- However, West Chester used three hits, including a three-run home run in the top of the sixth inning to take a 4-2 lead. The Golden Rams added a run in the top of the ninth inning to extend their lead to 5-2.
- Kelly drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the ninth inning and later scored on a Carrell single into right center. The comeback attempt would end there as West Chester collected the final out to secure the win

- Both Winkelseth and Sherman posted two-hit games.
ON THE MOUND

Chris Horvath (Lakeshore, Ont.) (2-1) allowed four runs on five hits and two walks, while striking out seven batters in five and 2/3 innings.
Taylor Horn (Leo, Ind.) tossed the final three and 1/3 innings, allowing a run and striking out three batters.
