Offense Leads Baseball to Game Two Rout at GVSU

Wayne State split a rescheduled doubleheader as the teams plated at Davenport University.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Wayne State University baseball team (15-12, 7-3 GLIAC) met Grand Valley State (14-10-1, 5-3 GLIAC) for a doubleheader at Davenport University on Monday after the two teams were unable to play in Allendale, Mich. due to poor weather conditions over the weekend.  The Warriors were unable to hold onto a 5-1 lead and GVSU took game one 9-6.  WSU pounded out 19 hits in game two to cruise to a 16-3 victory.

GAME ONE vs. GRAND VALLEY STATE (L, 6-9)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- Wayne State started quickly with two runs on four hits in the top of the first inning.  Aaron Loconsole (Macomb, Mich. / Marine City) and Brad Baldwin (Troy, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic) began the game with back-to-back singles.  Justin Kelly (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South) delivered an RBI single to left field and Ryan Mergener (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Portage Central) put WSU up 2-0 with an RBI single to right field.  A two-out, solo home run by GVSU's Brody Andrews in the bottom of the second inning cut the visitors' lead in half, 2-1.  Two walks and a Lakers' throwing error led to WSU's third run of the game and Loconsole followed with an RBI single to right center.  Starter Jared Tobey (St. Clair, Mich.) (4-1) struck out the side in the bottom of the third inning.

- JT Conti (Trenton, Mich.) extended WSU's lead to 5-1 with an RBI double in the top of the fourth inning after a GVSU pitching change.  Tobey and the Warriors kept GVSU quiet in the bottom of the fourth inning with the help of a 6-4-3 double play.  A three-run triple in the bottom of the fifth inning cut WSU's lead to one, 5-4.  A passed ball charged to Kelly later in the frame tied the game at 5-5.  After a pitching change, GVSU added three more runs to take an 8-5 lead.  Griffin Harms (Bingham Farms, Mich. / Birmingham Groves) crushed a solo home run in the sixth inning to pull the Warriors with two, 8-6.

- GVSU added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning and the Warriors were unable to create any momentum in the top of the seventh inning as the Lakers completed the comeback and won 9-6.

GAME TWO vs. GRAND VALLEY STATE (W, 16-3)
HOW IT HAPPENED

Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer) (4-3) settled in and retired 12 of the next 14 batters after GVSU scored its third run of the game.  WSU scored four runs on four hits and two GVSU errors to blow the game open in the top of the sixth inning.  Peake highlighted the frame with a two-run triple.  A passed ball in the top of the seventh inning allowed Tristen Jorah (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Stevenson) to score and give the Warriors an 11-3 lead.

- A two-run single to right center from Loconsole extended WSU's lead to 13-3 in the top of the eighth inning.  The Warriors scored three more runs in the ninth inning including an RBI double from Mergener.  Nick Cowen (
