GVSU Clobbers Findlay, Closes in on GLIAC Regular Season Title

ALLENDALE, Mich. – Grand Valley State jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as the Laker women's lacrosse team waxed Findlay, 21-7, at the GVSU Lacrosse/Track & Field Stadium Friday night. The Lakers now hold an all-time record of 4-0 against the Oilers.

The 21 goals scored by the Lakers (11-4, 5-0 GLIAC) ties a season high first tallied against Wheeling Jesuit on April 1, with 13 different players recording at least one point in the blowout win. Brooke Ingraham, Carolyn Kraus, Ryan Skomial, and Meghan Datema led the team in scoring with three goals each, while Ingraham chipped in two assists for five points on the evening. Also adding a pair of assists were Kira Dosenberry, Sarah Lowe, and Katie Tomlinson.

GVSU's leading scorer this season, Erika Neumen was held to one goal on four shots, but her goal with 1:17 left in the opening half put her at the top of the single-season goal scoring list, passing Allyson Fritts and her 56-goal season in 2013. Neumen also moves seven points closer to tying Fritts' single-season points record. Neumen also pulled down five draw controls in the win, tying her with Dosenberry for the team-lead.

The Grand Valley State defense continued their tight play into tonight's game, causing 10 of the 20 Findlay (5-7, 3-2 GLIAC) turnovers. In goal, Sarah Zwilsky made eight saves and scooped up three ground balls.

GVSU scored the game's first three goals before Findlay was able to respond. The Lakers built up an 8-3 lead with 10:29 to go in the first half when the home team reeled off seven unanswered goals to put their advantage to 12 as the Oilers had no answer for the potent Laker offense.

Kraus and Stiemann scored the first goals of the second half to give GVSU a 17-3 lead, extending their run of unanswered goals to nine before Michelle Lortie was able to end the run with an unassisted goal for the Oilers. Victoria Devine, Meghan Datema, and Kerrigan Baird scored the final four goals of the game for Grand Valley State before Findlay tallied three straight to end the game, giving the Lakers their eight straight win.

Although they committed the same amount of turnovers as Findlay, Grand Valley State shot the ball 41 times to Findlay's 19, limited the Oiler offense to three free-position attempts while drawing seven attempts of their own, and held an incredible 23-7 advantage in draw controls, tying for third-highest in a single game for GVSU.

Grand Valley State looks to wrap up their third consecutive GLIAC regular season title when they welcome second-place Tiffin (8-6, 5-0 GLIAC) on Sunday (Apr. 19) at 1 p.m. The Lakers will be honoring their eight graduating seniors before the beginning of Sunday's game.
