ASHLAND, Ohio -- The Wayne State University volleyball program (19-10, 10-7 GLIAC) fell at Ashland (20-9, 11-5 GLIAC) on Friday night in the regular season finale.
The Warriors will need to wait until the completion of Saturday's GLIAC schedule to find out their seed in the upcoming GLIAC Tournament, which begins on Nov. 16th.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Back-to-back kills from
Mikayla Shell (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) gave WSU a 5-3 lead in the first set. Â A point from
Avery Punches (Rockford, Mich.) put the Warriors ahead 15-11. Â Ashland responded with a 5-0 run to take a 16-15 lead. Â The Eagles continued to lead 23-19 and would eventually win 25-21.
• The second set was tied at 4-4 before two AU attack errors and a kill from Shell gave the visitors a 7-4 advantage. Â
Hailey Richardson (New Boston, Mich. / Huron) trimmed the deficit to two at 12-10 with a kill that started a mini-rally, which saw WSU tie the set at 12-12. Â The set remained tied at 17-17 after a combo block from Shell and
Emily Norscia (Livonia, Mich. / Livonia Churchill). Â An Eagles' attacking error and another kill from Shell gave the Green & Gold a 20-18 lead and forced a timeout by the home bench. Â Ashland tied the game at 21-21 and lead 23-22 after a kill by Alli Cudworth. Â After a Punches kill tied the set at 23-23, a WSU service error put AU a point away from winning and the Eagles won the final point to take a 2-0 match lead.
• WSU took a 3-0 lead to begin the third set aided by two Ashland errors.  However, Ashland regained its form and led 5-4 after a Warriors' error.  AU used a 4-0 run to take a 9-7 lead and force a WSU timeout.  Consecutive errors by the Eagles helped WSU take a 10-9 lead.  The back-and-forth affair continued and two kills from Punches kept the Warriors on top 18-17.  Ashland rallied to win the set 25-19 to complete the 3-0 sweep.
