DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's tennis team (4-3 overall, 4-3 GLIAC) defeated Michigan Tech (4-4 overall, 4-4 GLIAC), 5-4, to snap a three-match losing streak on Saturday morning at the WSU Tennis Courts. Freshman
Julia Walz (Rastatt, Germany) clinched the match with a three-set victory (4-6, 7-6(5), 6-3) over Vicky Quinde at No. 4 singles.
"Another five-hour match and it came down to our sole freshman who stepped up big and came from behind to win the deciding match," head coach Sheila Synder said. "It was overall a great team effort."
DOUBLES RESULTS
- Senior pair in
Lauren Hughes (Detroit, Mich. / Southfield) and
Ashley Walker (Canton, Mich. / Salem) posted a 8-4 win over Quinde and Natalia Parra at the third doubles flight, while junior
Liz Ghellere (Ararangua, Brazil) and Walz bested Paola Quintana and Allenca Rolim, 8-6, at No. 2 doubles.
- Sophomores
Liv Peisachovitz (Vaughan, Ont.) and
Dasha Kuznetsova (Moscow, Russia) fell, 8-2, to Kwang Suthijindawong and Sandra Cvetanovic at the first doubles position.
SINGLES RESULTS
- Hughes recorded a two-set victory (6-2, 6-1) over Kat Donovan at the sixth singles flight, and Peisachovitz defeated Quintana, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 2 singles.
- Ghellere lost in three-sets (6-1, 5-7, 6-4) to Cvetanovic at the third singles position, while sophomore
Astrid Ciellza (Tecumseh, Ont.) was beat by Parra (5-7, 6-2, 6-2) at the fifth singles flight.
- Kuznetsova dropped a two-set match (6-2, 6-1) to Suthijindawong at No. 1 singles.
UP NEXT
