#1 GVSU's Remarkable Streak Ends in 1-0 Loss at #7 Minnesota State

The Lakers suffer their first loss since Nov. 29, 2012

All streaks, no matter how long or remarkable they are, come to an end. Sunday afternoon in Mankato, Minnesota, the Grand Valley State women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 setback at the hands of No. 7 Minnesota State. The loss snaps a 27-match winning streak — tied for the fourth-longest run in NCAA Division II history — and drops the No. 1 Lakers' overall record to 3-1-0.

It is GVSU's first loss since Nov. 29, 2012, when it fell 2-1 to No. 5 UC San Diego in the NCAA Semifinals. Moreover, it is the club's first loss in the six-match series with the Mavericks.

Scoring opportunities were few and far between all afternoon, but Korey Kronforst capitalized on a breakaway in the 81st minute to make the difference for Minnesota State. Of the Lakers' five shots, four were on goal, while the Mavericks managed to five of their 14 attempts on target.

GVSU will have to regroup quickly as its GLIAC schedule kicks off Saturday (Sep. 20) night against archrival Ferris State. Action will commence at 5 p.m. in Big Rapids, Michigan.

Notes:
-The Lakers fell to 2-1-3 all-time against Minnesota State, and they are now 6-1-5 versus Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference opponents
-Today's loss also snaps GVSU's nine-match road winning streak, which was the third-longest run in program history
-This is the first time the Lakers lost to a non-conference opponent in a regular season match since Sep. 4, 2005, when they fell to Missouri-Saint Louis
