Tech Men Come Up Short at Ashland

Video: Coach Luke Interview

ASHLAND, Ohio — Ashland broke a 67-all deadlock with a 3-pointer with 46 seconds remaining and went on to a 73-67 victory over Michigan Tech in GLIAC men's basketball at Kates Gymnasium today.

Kyle Monroe scored 12 points in a four-minute span to keep the Huskies in the game and eventually put his team up 67-65 with a 3-pointer at the 2:27 mark.

The Eagles then got three straight offensive rebounds and eventually tied the game at 67 with 1:22 showing.

Monroe drove the left side of the lane and misfired on a layup before AU's Adrian Cook made a triple for the 70-67 advantage.

Luke Heller missed another layup with 24 seconds left, and the Huskies were forced to foul. Ashland made 3-of-4 free throws to ice its win.

"I'm not as upset about the missed layups as I am about giving up offensive rebounds and letting them have four chances in the final minute," said Tech coach Kevin Luke. "I think we're getting to be a better road team, but you saw today that we're not quite there."

The Huskies led by as many as 10 points in the first half as Kyle Stankowski and Dillon Gordon made jumpers and Monroe finished a three-point play to put Tech up 36-26.

Ashland (12-2, 6-2 GLIAC) closed within 36-30 at the half, then spanned a 9-0 run into the second half to pull within 36-35.

It was nip and tuck the rest of the game with neither team leading by more than four until the final seconds.

Monroe posted a game-high 24 points on 9-of-14 shooting including 4-of-5 from long range. Stankowski was the only other Husky in double figures with 12 off the bench.

Both teams shot 49 percent from the field. The hosts used a 36-23 rebounding advantage and made seven more free throws than the Huskies.

Michigan Tech will look to bounce back with another road game on Thursday (Jan. 14) at Ferris State. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
