Men's Basketball Takes Nail Biter from Tiffin

The Warriors led by one point at halftime and eventually won by two, 58-56.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball team (4-4, 3-1 GLIAC) hosted Tiffin (2-7, 0-4 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon and the Warriors won 58-56 in what was a close game throughout.  The Dragons had a chance to take the lead with a three-pointer on their final possession but it drew only iron and the Warriors secured the rebound and the victory.  It was Tiffin's last trip to the Matthaei as the Dragons are moving from the GLIAC to the G-MAC beginning next season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The teams were tied at 5-5 at the 15-minute mark of the opening half but Tiffin would lead 9-5 and eventually 16-9 with 8:48 to play before halftime as the Dragons held WSU's offense in check.  A trey from George Spencer (Detroit, Mich. / Belleville) cut the visitors' lead to four, 18-14, at the six-minute mark.  On the next possession, WSU defense forced a turnover and Spencer brought the Warriors within two slamming home a breakaway dunk.  Chuck Key (Detroit, Mich. / Cass Tech) converted on a three-point play to give the Warriors a 19-18 advantage with 4:24 left before halftime and WSU continued to apply pressure with a layup from Ronald Booth (Detroit, Mich. / Consortium) pushed the home lead to 23-20 at the three-minute mark.  With just under two minutes to play Wayne State led by five but the Green & Gold led by one at halftime, 26-25.

- Tiffin regained the lead early in the second half, 31-27 on an Austin Adams jumper with 18:28 on the clock.  Spencer created his own shot and knocked down a jumper at the 16-minute mark to put WSU on top 35-33.  The Warriors would lead until a Shane Waldon tip-in with 1:54 left to play gave TU a 54-53 lead.  Spencer continued to have the hot hand and his three-pointer on the following trip down the court gave Wayne State a 56-54 lead that it would not relinquish until late in the second half.  Booth made two clutch free throws with 24 seconds remaining to push the home advantage to 58-54.  Alex Brown connected on a 14-foot jumper with 15 seconds left to play and a nearly costly foul and turnover charged to Booth allowed Tiffin an opportunity to tie or take the lead.  However, Adams' potential game-winner was off and Booth redeemed his mistake with important rebound.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Booth finished with a game-high 17 points, while Key (13) and Spencer (12) both scored in double figures.  Marcus Moore (Lansing, Mich. / Waverly) grabbed six rebounds and dished out five assists.

LEADING THE DRAGONS
- Adams scored 15 points to lead the Dragons, while Waldon chipped in 10.

UP NEXT
- The Warriors will host Michigan-Dearborn on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. in the final non-conference game of the season.
