Kinch's Effort Wasted in 2-1 Defeat

Wayne State concludes the USI Invitational on Sunday with a one-run loss to Southern Indiana.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- The Wayne State University baseball team (1-5) concluded the USI Invitational on Sunday with a 2-1 loss against Southern Indiana (7-3).  Starter Alex Kinch (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer) (0-2) was impressive on the mound, allowing two earned runs in seven innings while striking out five.  The offense showed signs of life with a ninth inning rally but the comeback attempt fell short.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Eagles struck first in the bottom of the second inning with a run on a groundout after a walk and a double.  USI added to its lead in the bottom of the third inning with an RBI double.  However, Kinch ended the rally with a pick off and a strikeout.

- The Warriors put two runners on base in the top of the fourth inning after an error and a JT Conti single (Trenton, Mich.) but were unable to produce any runs.  Kinch kept USI quiet in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.  WSU used a 5-4-3 double play in the sixth inning to keep the deficit at 2-0.

- Despite a lead off double in the seventh inning by the Eagles, Kinch was able to escape without allowing any damage.  Justin Sherman (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer) singled through the left side to begin the eighth inning but was caught trying to steal second.  Tyler Tompson (Farmington, Mich.) replaced Kinch in the bottom of the eighth inning and was able to navigate around a one-out double to retire the side.  Conti doubled to right field with one out in the ninth inning and pinch-hitter Cole Clifton (Sterling Heights. Mich. / De La Salle) singled to left center to bring the go-ahead run to the plate.  Jared Tobey (St. Clair, Mich.) cut USI's lead in half with an RBI single through the left side.  However, USI was able to induce back-to-back ground outs to seal the victory.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Conti went 2-for-4 while six other Warriors recorded one hit each.

ON THE MOUND
- Tompson pitched a scoreless inning of relief and struck out one batter while allowing one hit.

UP NEXT
- The Warriors will make their annual spring break trip to Florida for the RussMatt Invitational beginning with a doubleheader against Minnesota Duluth on March 11.  WSU will play eight games on the trip.
