Men's Tennis Wins 6-1 Over LSSU to Start Conference Slate

The Warriors began their first of six league matches with a win on Friday.

DETROIT -- The No. 22-ranked Wayne State University men's tennis team (9-8 overall, 1-0 GLIAC) used a strong start to down visiting Lake Superior State (5-4 overall, 1-1 GLIAC) by a 6-1 score on Friday inside the Duchene Athletic Facility in what was the GLIAC opener for WSU.

The Warriors also began their four-match home stand with a victory.  The Green and Gold will welcome Michigan Tech on Saturday, before hosting Grand Valley State and Ferris State next weekend.

DOUBLES
Wayne State cleaned up in doubles by grabbing all three matches for the opening point.

Division II's new third-ranked duo of Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany) and Daniel Grey (Wiesbaden, Germany) fell behind 1-0 early against Stefan Andrei and Lezan Koyuncu at the first flight, but did not allow the LSSU team another game to win 6-1.  It was their fourth straight win together dating back to March 12 at Barry.

The No. 12-ranked Luke Laws (Sunderland, England) and Dom Spicer (London, England) were next to post a triumph at the No. 2 position.  They defeated Driss Sedrati and Jordi Fraile Raton by a 6-1 tally for their 10th win together this year.

Over at the No. 3 spot, Denali Kitayama (West Bloomfield Township, Mich. / Walled Lake Central (United States Air Force Academy) and Benjamin Hill (Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) paired with one another for the second time in 2024, and first since the Walsh contest on February 24.  The tandem topped Lluc Limongi Ollers and Raul Velasco Garcia 6-2 to conclude doubles.

SINGLES
It was a near-sweep for the Warriors in singles, but the squad did enough to secure a 6-1 win.

Grey, ranked eighth in the country, put in an impressive effort in nearly shutting out Limongi Ollers at the first flight.  The senior settled for a 6-0, 6-1 triumph as the first WSU player to finish in the category.

Spicer faced Sedrati at the No. 3 spot and was able to collect set wins of 6-2 and 6-3 to put Wayne State ahead 3-0.

Needing a comeback effort at the No. 4 position was Kitayama, and he did just that vs. Fraile Raton.  The Lakers' player won 6-4 in the opening set, but the Green and Gold's senior notched victories of 6-4 and 6-3 to emerge with the triumph.

Drenth, ranked No. 12 in the nation, lost 6-4 in the second set to Andrei, but had 6-3 wins in the other two sets at the second flight for his team-leading 13th singles triumph in 2024 (13-2).  His victory served as the clincher for WSU on Friday.

Seeing the court for the first time was Emil Mikkelsen (Soenderborg, Denmark), and the senior put in a strong performance vs. Koyuncu.  Mikkelsen registered set wins of 6-0 and 6-1 to win at the No. 6 spot.

The Warriors were unable to sweep the day as Hill dropped back-to-back 6-4 sets to Velasco Garcia at the No. 5 position.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will continue its four-match home swing by welcoming Michigan Tech to Detroit on Saturday.  The match between the Warriors and Huskies is scheduled once again for 10 a.m.
