UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's tennis concluded the fall regular season with a 6-3 win over GLIAC opponent Saginaw Valley (5-6, 4-6 GLIAC) on Monday afternoon at the SVSU Tennis Complex. The Warriors (9-3, 8-3 GLIAC) are ranked third in the GLIAC before Tournament play.
DOUBLES- Senior
Alex Poissant (Laval, Que. / Vanier Prep) and junior
Andreea Mitrache (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Warren Cousino) topped Izabella Ismailova and Danielle Slonac, 8-2, at the second doubles flight, where the pair went 9-0 during the regular season. Poissant and Mitrache only lost one match at No. 1 doubles.
- Juniors
Lauren Hughes (Detroit, Mich. / Southfield) and
Ashley Walker (Canton, Mich. / Salem) fell short to Abigail Shonk and Shea Donahue, 9-7, at No. 3 doubles.
- Freshmen duo
Liv Peisachovitz (Vaughan, Ont. / Northview Heights S.S.) and
Dasha Kuznetsova (Moscow, Russia / Moscow School 45) were defeated by Erin Doud and Ana Pico, 8-4, at the first position.
SINGLES- Mitrache bested Ismailova in two sets, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 1 singles. The junior finished the regular season undefeated at the first singles flight.
- Kuznetsova beat Doud, 7-5, 6-2, at the fourth position, while sophomore
Liz Ghellere (Ararangua, Brazil / Unificado) defeated Shonk, 7-5, 6-3, at the fifth flight.
- Poissant won in a super tiebreaker, 10-8 (5-7, 7-5), over Pico at No. 2 singles, and Peisachovitz topped Donahue in three set, 6-4, 0-6, 7-5, at the third position.
- Freshman
Astrid Ciellza (Tecumseh, Ont. / St. Anne's S.S.) lost to Slonac, 7-5, 6-1, at No. 6 singles.
UP NEXT- WSU will begin the fall post season at the GLIAC Tournament, starting on Oct. 23. The Warriors are slated to play Hillsdale at 6:45 p.m. in Midland, Mich. at the Greater Midland Tennis Center. Wayne State lost to the Chargers, 5-4, last Friday.
