Volleyball Blanks Lake Superior State in GLIAC Opener

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University volleyball team (7-2 overall, 1-0 GLIAC) topped Lake Superior State (0-9 overall, 0-1 GLIAC) in the league opener on Friday night in three sets.  The Warriors won by scores of 25-17, 25-17 and 25-20.

HOW IT HAPPENED
WSU led 6-3 early in the opening set following a bad set by LSSU.  Janna Kray (Westerville, Ohio / Worthington Christian) pushed the home advantage to 9-5.  Taylor Wagner (St. Joseph, Mich. / Lakeshore) made it 15-10 with a kill before Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) gave the Green & Gold a 19-12 lead with a quick skip-set attack.  Keilyn Carpenter (Vermontville, Mich. / Maple Valle) subbed in and made an immediate impact with a point to give the home side a 21-14 advantage.  Two kills late in the set from Lauren VanderWal (Caledonia, Mich.) powered WSU to a 25-17 victory.

The second set was even at 4-4 following a Wayne State error but a 6-0 rally put the Warriors on top 10-4.  Halle Shell (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) controlled the rally from the service line and also picked up an assisted block during the run.  A service ace from Wagner followed by a kill from Kray made it 14-8.  WSU pushed the margin to 22-13 after a point from Alexa Withun (Troy, Mich. / Athens) and an ace by Ella Uganski (Jenison, Mich.).  Kray and Duffield teamed up for a block and a Laker attacking error to account for the final two points of the set and gave Wayne State a 25-17 win.

A tally by Withun early in the third set put the Green & Gold on top 4-2.  Three consecutive kills by Kray made it 8-4.  Wayne State led 19-11 and 23-14 but a late charge by LSSU trimmed the home advantage to 24-20.  However, Maddie Morrison (Flushing, Mich.) finished the set and the match with a kill, giving the Warriors a 25-20 victory.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Kray was extremely efficient, collecting 13 kills on 20 swings to post a .600 hitting percentage.  VanderWal also finished with 10 kills, while Duffield handed out 42 assists.  Maddy Benoit (Farmington, Mich. / Mercy) was solid on defense, posting 18 digs.

ONE BIG THING
The WSU offense was clicking on all cylinders, hitting .333 compared to LSSU's .142 hitting percentage.

HEAD COACH THOUGHTS
"It was a nice start to the conference schedule," said head coach Tim Koth.  "I felt our offense was well balanced and in-sync most of the evening.  That put a lot of pressure on a much improved Lake State squad. We got a great performance from Jenna tonight!"
