Baseball Drops Saturday Contest

The Warriors lost 6-4 to Illinois-Springfield.

CARTERSVILLE, Ga. -- The Wayne State University baseball team (6-3) fell by a score of 6-4 on Saturday to Illinois-Springfield (6-3) as play continued in the Perfect Game Tournament.  The teams were tied at 3-3 in the fourth inning but a three-run fifth inning for UIS proved to be the difference.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Prairie Stars struck first with a run in the bottom of the first inning.  Wayne State responded with a a pair of runs in the top of the second inning to take a 2-1 lead.  A leadoff home run from Griffin Harms (Bingham Farms, Mich. / Birmingham Groves) and an RBI single from Tristen Jorah (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Sterling Heights Stevenson) accounted for the offense.  A sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second inning for UIS tied the contest at 2-2.

- Both teams were quiet in the third inning but WSU took a 3-2 advantage on an RBI double from Jorah in the top of the fourth inning.  Jared Tobey (St. Clair, Mich.) (0-2) worked around three hits in the bottom of the fourth inning to keep the Green & Gold on top.  The defense aided the big left-hander as Devin Rose (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Orchard Lake St. Mary's) was able to cut down a runner at home trying to score on a two-out single into center field.

- After two singles in the bottom of the fifth inning, Tyler Waldrop (Grand Ledge, Mich.) entered to replace Tobey but UIS would score three runs on four hits to take a 5-3 lead.  An RBI double from Justin Kelly (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South) in the top of the eighth inning cut the deficit to one, 5-4.  The Warriors had runners at first and third later that inning but were unable to find the game-tying tally.

- UIS added an insurance run in the ninth inning and WSU was unable to turn a leadoff, pinch-hit single from Sean Winkelseth (Ypsilanti, Mich.) into any offense as Illinois-Springfield avenged Friday's Wayne State victory.

AT THE PLATE
- Justin Sherman, Kelly and Jorah all posted multi-hit games as Jorah also drove in a pair of runs.  Harms crushed his third home run of the season.

ON THE MOUND
- Tobey allowed three earned runs on nine hits an two walks, while striking out two batters in four and a 1/3 innings.  Waldrop struck out three batters in three and 2/3 innings but allowed two earned runs on five hits.
