DETROIT – The Wayne State University women's tennis team (2-0 overall, 2-0 GLIAC) earned its second conference win in three days, holding off visitor Michigan Tech (3-2 overall, 1-2 GLIAC).
Senior
Liz Ghellere (Ararangua, Brazil) earned a three-set win over junior Vicky Quinde (2-6, 6-2, 6-1) to clinch the match for the Warriors.
DOUBLES RESULTS
Junior
Dasha Kuznetsova (Moscow, Russia) teamed with Ghellere to defeat sophomore Paola Quintana and senior Sandra Cvetanovic, 8-6.
At No. 2 doubles, redshirt freshman
Khadija Da-Silva (Burlington, Ont. / Robert Bateman S.S.) and redshirt senior
Andreea Mitrache (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Cousino) wered edged out by MTU freshman Ivona Gorgioski and junior Vicky Quinde, 8-6.
Freshmen
Linda Liong (Tanjung Kidurong, Malaysia) and
Irena van Meer (Amsterdam, Netherlands) gave the Warriors the second point in the double diviison, winning 8-3 over sophomore Anabella Neri and junior Allenca Rolim.
SINGLES RESULTS
In the first flight, Mitrache held off Quintana in three sets, 5-7, 6-2, 10-5.
Da-Silva, playing No. 2, lost to Gorgioski, 7-5, 6-2.
Kuznetsova took on Cvetanovic in the fourth flight, winning 6-2, 6-4, while Liong won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5.
Astrid Chiellza faced Rolim in the sixth flight, falling 7-6 (3), 6-1.
UP NEXT
The Warriors will head to Midland for the ITA Regional tournament, hosted by Northwood University beginning on Friday. The three-day tournament will run through Sunday.
