Box Score 2 The Malone University baseball team wrapped up its 11-game homestand on Wednesday at Thurman Munson Stadium by tallying 1-1 record against Ohio Dominican University. Right-handed starting pitcher
Taylore Baker led the Pioneers to a 5-2 victory in the opener after allowing just one base hit over seven strong innings. Ohio Dominican then bounced back in game two, earning the split with a 7-2 triumph.
Malone's record moved to 15-17 overall and 10-7 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) following Wednesday's action. ODU, meanwhile, now holds a 16-14 overall mark with a 6-9 record in conference games.
The Pioneers will be back in action over the weekend when they hit the road for a three-game series against Saginaw Valley State (MI) University. Malone and SVSU will play a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday before wrapping up the series on Sunday with a nine-inning contest at 12:00 p.m.
Game One RecapThe Panthers only hit in the opener came in the first inning when centefielder Jossue Delgado, the third batter of the game, lined a pitch back up the middle.
Malone grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI fielder's choice by shortstop
Kyler King. The Pioneers then made it 2-0 in the third when leftfielder
Hayden Mobley came around to score on a Panther throwing error.
Ohio Dominican finally broke through in the top of the sixth, using a pair of walks and a two-out Pioneer throwing error to tie the game at 2-2.
Malone quickly responded, plating three runs in the bottom of the inning. King brought home the first run with a single through the left side of the infield.
Austin Pachan, who had entered the game to pinch run in the fifth, then stepped to the plate and lined a two-run single to right.
This was more than enough run support for Baker as he retired the side in order in the seventh to cement the victory. Baker improved to 5-3 on the season after giving up two unearned runs on just the one hit. The senior struck out five and walked three while extending his streak to 33 straight innings without giving up an earned run.
The two squads combined for just four base hits in the contest as ODU starting pitcher Ryan Colegate dueled with Baker for the first 5.1 innings, yielding three runs (two earned) on only one base hit.
Although the Pioneers were limited to three hits, they were able to put runners on base throughout the game by drawing a total of eight walks.
Game Two RecapThe Panthers jumped out to an early 7-0 advantage in game two, plating four unearned runs in the second and three more runs in the third.
Malone got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth when third baseman
Tyler Eagon drew a bases-loaded walk. The Pioneers then brought home another run in the seventh when Mobley lined an RBI double to left.
However, the two late scores were not enough to overcome the sizable early deficit.
Right-hander
Matt Litty took the loss (1-1) after surrendering the seven runs (two earned) on three hits over the first 2.1 innings.
Ryan Bidwell earned the win for ODU after working the first 6.1 innings, yielding two runs (one earned) on seven hits.
Malone registered eight hits in game two as centerfielder
Keanan Locke and Mobley each went 3-for-4.
