Oilers Fall to #1 Ashland
Findlay, OH - The University of Findlay women's basketball team fell in their final home game of the 2017 season on Saturday, Feb. 18 to the top team in the country, Ashland University. With the 102-68 loss, the Oilers fall to 13-14 overall and 7-11 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference (GLIAC) play with just one game remaining in the season.
The Oilers were able to keep the game close through one quarter of action as they trailed just 19-15 after ten minutes. However, Findlay scored just three points in the first nine and a half minutes of the second quarter and finished with eight in the second frame while Ashland poured in 25 points to take a 44-23 lead at the break.
In the third quarter, the Oilers managed to score 25 points of their own, but Ashland answered with 35 and by games end, the Eagles reached triple digits for the tenth time this season.
Findlay made just 21-of-61 from the floor for 34.4% but did shoot a high percentage from deep as they hit 12-of-27 for 44.4%. On the other side, the Eagles made 35-of-61 for 57.4% including 11-of-16 from deep (68.8%). The Purple and Gold cashed in from the charity stripe as they made 21-of-26 from the stripe. The Eagles also held a 45-28 advantage on the boards.
Playing in her final game in Croy Gymnasium, Findlay's all-time leading three point shooter Karli Bonar scored 12 points, all of which fittingly came via the deep ball. She has made 260 three-pointers in her career and has one more game to extend her record even further.
Junior Haley Horstman led the Oilers with 16 points on a career-high four three pointers while sophomore Christa Puthoff scored seven points and led Findlay with six rebounds.
Sophomore Allie Thobe dished out a team-high four assists and also chipped in seven points and two steals.
Findlay's final game of the year on Thursday, Feb. 23 on the road at Walsh University. That game will begin at 5:30 pm.
