Women's Basketball Wins Fifth Straight With 76-69 Home Win Over Tiffin

Senior guard Deborah Simmers paced Malone with 20 points as the Pioneers defeated Tiffin University 76-69 at home on Thursday.

Box Score
The Malone University women's basketball team (12-5, 7-4 GLIAC) secured another win on Thursday night in Malone's Osborne Hall against Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent Tiffin University (5-10, 2-9 GLIAC) by the score of 76-69. With the victory, the Pioneers extended their win streak to five consecutive games, their longest string since the 2006-2007 season.

The Pioneers jumped out to a big lead on the Dragons with a 19-3 run to open the contest and never looked back.  Early Pioneer foul trouble allowed Tiffin to get back into the game as the Dragons knocked down seven of ten free throw attempts in the first half.  Junior forward Logan Pastor paced Malone with 11 points in the first half and helped the Pioneers to a 35-30 lead at the intermission.

Early in the second half, the Pioneers went on another big run, this one being 14 points, before the Dragons would score again.  This gave Malone its biggest lead of the game with a score of 49-32 with 16:53 left in the game.  The points in the paint were a major contributor to why the Pioneer lead was too much for Tiffin to overcome as the Dragons did manage to trim the final deficit to seven points but could not overtake the hosts.  Malone looked inside early and often and outscored Tiffin 30-18 down low for the contest.

Five of the Pioneers reached double digits with senior guard Deborah Simmers leading all scorers with 20 points, including an impressive 100% shooting effort from the stripe (10-10).  Pastor dropped 15 points to go along with a team-high (tied) four assists. Junior forward Lindsy Snyder tossed in 12 points and added ten boards giving her a double-double on the night.  In addition, sophomore forward Tara Schaffter played a huge role coming off the bench with an outstanding 100% from the field as she added 12 points (6-6). Senior guard Sydnee Penn notched 11 points in Malone's victory.

For Tiffin, Karli Mast and Kaylee Patterson each paced the Dragons with 18 points.  Mast and Bre Nauman led the squad in rebounds with four apiece.

The Pioneers shot an impressive 53.8% (28-52) from the field.  Malone also drained 6-17 three's (35.3%) and was 14-20 (70%) from the line.  Tiffin shot 23-52 (42.6%) from the field.  The Dragons managed to knock down 9-22 (40.9%) from deep and 14-19 (73.7%) from the free throw line. The Pioneers also out rebounded the Dragons 35-26.

Malone will look to add on to this memorable run seeking a sixth straight victory against Ohio Dominican University (7-8, 4-7 GLIAC) Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m., again in Malone's Osborne Hall.  Live video streaming will be provided for the contest at http://www.malonepioneers.com/showcase.
