DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's tennis team earned an 8-1 victory over Walsh University on Saturday, improving to 7-2 in the GLIAC. Wayne State is just one of three teams in the 12-team conference with two losses or less.
Following Saturday's dual matches, Wayne State is tied for second place in the GLIAC regular-season standings with Ferris State University at 7-2. Northwood (8-1 GLIAC) is in first place.
The Warriors (8-7 overall) won all three doubles flights Saturday to open the match with a 3-0 lead. Wayne State followed the strong start by winning five of the six matches in singles to clinch the victory.
In doubles, junior
Trey Keating (Troy, Mich. / Troy) and freshman
Stephane Robineau (Paris, France) earned an 8-2 win at the No. 1 flight. Senior
Michael FitzGerald (Grosse Ile, Mich. / Grosse Ile) and freshman
Clement Charriere (Marseille, France) teamed up for an 8-3 triumph at No. 2 doubles, while senior
Melvin Joseph (Northville, Mich. / Northville) and sophomore
Mohamed Fazyl Kechai (Paris, France / Martin Luther King) won the final four games of their match to win 8-6 at No. 3 doubles.
Leading 3-0, the Warriors wrapped up the match victory with five victories in singles. Wayne State earned three straight-set victories. Robineau won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, Fazyl Kechai was a 6-2, 6-0 winner at No. 4 singles (his eighth-straight singles win), and freshman
Ryan Carlson (Armada, Mich. / Armada) earned a 6-0, 6-1 triumph at No. 6 singles for the Warriors.
Charriere dropped the first set in his singles match at the top flight, but won the final two sets, winning 1-6, 7-5, 10-3 over Walsh's Pablo Cabezon. FitzGerald split sets with Walsh's Carlos Jaque, but rebounded to win the final set, winning his match, 6-2, 4-6, 10-7.
Keating won the first set in his match at No. 5 singles, but dropped a second-set tiebreaker before falling in the third set. Walsh's Iagos Lucca won over Keating 1-6, 7-6, 14-12.
The Warriors return to the court Sunday for a 10 a.m. home match against Malone University.
