GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Wayne State University volleyball team (9-4, 5-0 GLIAC) earned its second sweep (25-19, 28-26, 26-24) of the weekend at Davenport (7-6, 3-2 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon to extend its winning streak to five.
WSU stays unbeaten in the GLIAC and keeps pace with seventh-ranked Ferris State for first place in the league standings. Â The Warriors begin the league schedule undefeated for the first time since the 2012 team started 7-0 in conference matches.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-
Hannah Moore (Louisville, Ky. / Assumption) gave the Warriors a 5-2 lead and the lead grew to 9-2 after an
Ellie Rodriguez (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Catholic Central) ace and a Panthers' attacking error. Â Two kills from
Michelle Asiedu (Holland, Ohio / Springfield) extended WSU's advantage to 18-8 and Wayne State would go on to win 25-19. Â A point from
Natalie Breault (Bad Axe, Mich.) and a combo block from
Grace Frazee (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) and
Hailey Richardson (New Boston, Mich. / Huron) ended the set.
- Davenport led the second set 6-2 but the Green & Gold would take an 8-7 lead on a kill from Frazee. Â Asiedu kept WSU on top, 14-11 with a kill before the set was tied at 15-15. Â The Panthers led 20-19 but the two sides traded points down the stretch, which remained tied at 26-26. Â The Warriors were the beneficiaries of two late DU errors to win the set 28-26.
- An ace from
Haley Tenelshof (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Jenison) gave WSU an 8-4 lead early in the third set.  A kill from Asiedu and a poor DU set pushed the Warriors' lead to 15-11.  Another DU error pulled WSU within five points of the sweep at 20-17.  The set was tied at 21-21, 22-22 and 23-23 before DU took a 24-23 lead on a service ace.  WSU answered with a point on a kill from Asiedu and eventually won the set 26-24 on a point from Frazee to secure its sixth sweep of the season.
