Baseball Punches GLIAC Ticket with Game One Walk Off

WSU and Malone will finish the regular season on Sunday at noon.

DETROIT -- With a magic number of one coming into the weekend, the Wayne State University baseball team (26-21, 18-12 GLIAC) hosted Malone (25-21, 17-11 GLIAC) for a doubleheader.  The Warriors secured their eighth consecutive trip to the GLIAC Tournament with a 6-5 walk off win in game one and the Pioneers answered with a 2-1 victory in game two.  All that is left to be decided is seeding for next week's GLIAC Tournament in Xenia, Ohio.

GAME ONE vs. MALONE (W, 6-5)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- Malone took advantage of a throwing error on the game's first play to jump out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning.  Ryan Mergener (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Portage Central) led off the bottom of the first inning with a double down the left field line and came around to score on an RBI groundout to tie the game at 1-1.  The Pioneers took a 3-1 lead with two runs on four hits in the top of the third inning.

- Back-to-back doubles by the visitors netted two runs in the top of the sixth to extend the deficit to 5-1.  After a triple from Mergener to begin the bottom of the sixth inning, Brad Baldwin (Troy, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic) started the comeback with an RBI single through the right side.  A wild pitch and an RBI double from Justin Kelly (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South) cut MU's lead to 5-4.  Nick Cowen (Tecumseh, Mich.) (1-1) came into pitch the top of the seventh inning and set down the Pioneers in order.

- Malone went to its closer to begin the seventh inning, who retired the first two batters before another pitching change.  Mergener singled to center and Baldwin followed with an RBI double to tie the game at 5-5.  Griffin Harms (Bingham Farms, Mich. / Birmingham Groves) blistered a single into left setting up a play at the plate where Baldwin was able to slide under the tag and win the game.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Mergener paced the offense, going 3-for-3 with three runs scored.
- Baldwin also turned in a three-hit performance, while diving in two runs.

ON THE MOUND
- Addison Pawelek (Shelby Twp., Mich. / De La Salle)  started and went six innings, allowing four earned runs and striking out five batters.
- Cowen earned his first career victory by pitching a scoreless sixth inning.

GAME TWO vs. MALONE (L, 1-2)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- Chris Horvath (Lakeshore, Ont.) (3-5) was able to dance around two singles to start the game and hang a zero in the top of the first inning.  JT Conti (Trenton, Mich.) gave WSU an early 1-0 lead with a double down the right field line.  Both teams were quiet until Malone scored two runs on two hits and a WSU error in the top of the fifth inning.

- MU threatened in the top of the eighth inning with a leadoff double, a walk and WSU's third error of the game but were unable to add to its one-run lead.  Tristen Jorah (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Stevenson) sent a two-out single up the middle in the bottom of the ninth and represented the game-tying run.  However, a fielder's choice ended the game.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Jorah posted a 2-for-4 performance.

ON THE MOUND
- Horvath lasted seven innings and struck out three while allowing one earned run on nine hits and a walk.
- Taylor Horn (Leo, Ind.) did not allow a run in his two innings of work.

UP NEXT
- Wayne State and Malone will finish the regular season on Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at noon.  The three seniors, Alex Kinch (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer), Aaron Loconsole (Macomb, Mich. / Marine City) and Daniel Peake (Mississauga, Ont.) will be recognized between the two games.
