Williams Picks Up GLIAC Leading 5th Save
Hillsdale, MI – With rain in the forecast at The Cube, the University of Findlay baseball team was forced to travel north to take on the Chargers of Hillsdale in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) matchup. Findlay dropped the lid lifter but was able to claim victory in the night cap, earning the doubleheader split and moving the Oilers record to 8-22 and 3-10 in conference play.
Homeruns spelled trouble for the visitors as Hillsdale hit three balls over the wall to help the Chargers win the first game of the day.
Hillsdale got on top with a single run in the first inning but the Oilers answered with their own runs in the top of the third.
Josh Schwerer singled with one out and scored when the next batter, Peter Yorgen, tripled. Chase Goulette then stepped to the dish and delivered his second of three hits, plating Findlay's second run of the inning and putting his team ahead 2-1. However, that lead did not last long as Hillsdale answered in a big way.
In the bottom of the third, the Chargers had four hits, three of which were home runs, and extended their lead to 5-2.
The scoring would halt until the sixth when Goulette scored on a single from Troy Merriman and setting the score at what would ultimately be a final, 5-3.
Colin Gossard (1-3) took the loss on the mound as he pitched four innings and allowed five runs, four of which were earned. He struck out two and walked one.
Goulette was three for three with an RBI and run scored. Yorgen had one hit, a triple, an RBI and a run scored while Merriman had a hit and an RBI.
The Oilers used a three-run third inning and a solid pitching performance from Alexander Theiss to win their eighth game of the season.
Findlay got on top early as Schwerer led off the contest with a walk and a stolen base and was promptly hit in by Goulette. Teams then traded zeros until Findlay's big inning, the top of the third.
Schwerer led of the inning with a bunt single and advanced on a sacrifice bunt from Yorgen. After a wild pitch, moving Schwerer to third, Goulette walked. The Oilers then got three straight hits from Christion Smith, Austin Adams, who doubled, and Pete Burkett. These hits put Findlay ahead 4--0
Hillsdale close the gap with a run in the sixth but Findlay secured the win with single runs in the seventh and eighth.
Theiss earned his first collegiate win on the mound as he pitched seven innings and allowed three runs, one earned, on nine hits. He struck out two and walked one.
Alex Williams picked up his GLIAC leading fifth save of the year as he pitched two innings and allowed just one hit and struck out three.
Kevin Schrock had three hits while Adams and Schwerer, who scored three runs, each had two hits.
Findlay will be back in action this Saturday, April 11, as they begin a four-game series with Malone University. The first game will begin at 1:00pm.
