Men's Basketball Wins Second Straight

The Warriors are now 5-5 at home this season.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball program (4-14, 3-12 GLIAC) won 72-67 over Parkside (11-12, 8-8 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon inside the Wayne State Fieldhouse.  WSU has won two straight and brought its home record to 5-5 at home.

HOW IT HAPPENED
A layup by Brailen Neely (Detroit, Mich. / Western International) tied the game at 7-7 early in the first half with 17:40 to play before halftime.  The game remained dead locked at 13-13 after a layup from David Hughes (Southfield, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) at the 15:09 mark.  The Rangers took a 22-19 lead on a triple from Tray Croft with nine minutes left in the first half.  Antonio Marshall (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) put WSU back on top, 28-27, with a jumper with 4:53 to play.  The Warriors led 30-27 after a Cortez Jackson (Harper Woods, Mich. / St. Clair Shores Lake Shore) jumper and 32-29 following two points from Avery Lewis (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron).  A late three-pointer from Croft set the halftime tally at 32-32.

Parkside started fast in the second half and led 36-32 but an offensive rebound plus a dunk by Hughes pushed the Green & Gold ahead, 40-39, at the 16:17 mark. The teams were tied at 44-44 and 49-49.  UWP led 56-52 with 9:09 remaining.  Two free throws from Marshall gave Wayne State a 60-59 advantage at the 5:50 mark.  A long-range shot by Ray Williams, Jr. (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) kept WSU on top, 63-62, with 4:31 left.  Jamir Simpson answered with a layup to give the Rangers a 67-65 lead at the three-minute mark.  Four straight points by Lewis allowed Wayne State to take a 69-67 at the 55-second mark.  A free throw by Hughes made it 70-67 and WSU's defense held its ground down the stretch to secure a 72-67 victory.
