Volleyball Wins Two On Saturday

Wayne State tops Edinboro in five sets to improve to 2-2.

CLARION, Pa. -- Following a thrilling comeback victory earlier in the day against Concord, the Wayne State University volleyball team (2-2) defeated Edinboro (2-1), 3-2, to conclude the Tony Banner Memorial Tournament at Clarion University on Saturday night. Freshman Michelle Asiedu led the Warriors with 13 kills. WSU won the first two sets and held on in the fifth set to reach the .500 mark for the season.

Emily Norscia (Livonia, Mich. / Livonia Churchill) and Hannah Moore (Louisville, Ky. / Assumption) were both named to the All-Tournament Team. Norscia finished the four matches with 31 kills (2.07/set). Moore tallied 40 kills (2.22/set) and 43 digs (2.39/set).

An Edinboro attack error gave WSU an 8-5 lead to begin the opening set. A kill from Moore extended the Warriors' lead to 17-13 but the Fighting Scots would storm back to take a 19-18 lead. Asiedu gave WSU a two-point advantage, 21-19, to the Green & Gold with a kill. Wayne State took four of the last five points to win the game 25-21.

WSU led 7-3 in set number two and extended its lead to 10-5 on a Edinboro attack error. Norscia connected on a set from Madison Reeves (Indianapolis, Ind. / Avon) to give the Warriors a 21-13 lead. The Scots trimmed the deficit to four at 24-20 but another Edinboro attack error gave WSU a 25-20 set victory and a 2-0 match lead.

Edinboro tied the match with victories in sets three and four. WSU trailed by just a point near the end of set three, 23-22, but were unable to collect the final two points.

In the fourth set, Edinboro led the entire match. WSU did pull within a point, 21-20, after a kill from Asiedu but that would be as close as the Warriors would come. Edinboro won the set 25-21 to force a decisive fifth set.

In the race to 15, the two teams were tied at 7-7 midway through the set. WSU never led by more than two points and that would be the final deficit in favor of the Warriors, 15-13.

Freshman Madison Kielty (Commerce Twp., Mich. / Canton) posted an impressive 30 digs while Reeves collected 48 assists and 18 digs. Moore posted her second double-double of the tournament with 11 digs to go with her 11 kills.

Wayne State will return to Midtown for five straight home matches beginning with Grand Valley State (2-2) on Friday at 7 PM. The Lakers were ranked No. 14 in the AVCA Preseason Coaches Poll.
