Kissimmee, Fla. -- The fifth-ranked Wayne State University softball team (18-4 overall) defeated Adelphi University (6-4 overall),
2-1, Thursday afternoon at the Rebel Spring Games.
The Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second as
Becca Ryan (Westland, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) singled and advanced to second on an errant throw. A sacrifice bunt by
Stephanie LeClair (Kitchener, Ont. / Forest Heights C.I.) moved Ryan to third where she scored on a two-out single through the left side by
Steph Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston).
WSU extended its lead in the bottom of the fifth as
Jaci Banton (Richmond Hill, Ont. / Cardinal Carter) had a one-out single to center field.
Rebecca Stanley (Waterloo, Ont. / Waterloo C.I.) followed with a base hit to right center. After a fielder's choice, Ryan doubled down the right field line plating Stanley.
The Panthers tallied their lone run in the sixth on two singles and a passed ball.
Wayne State pitcher
Casey Hanes (Richmond, Va. / Douglas Freeman) went the distance to improve to 14-2 by allowing four hits and one unearned run with nine strikeouts to zero walks.
Ryan and
Bailey Reid (Guelph, Ont. / Ross Collegiate V.I.) each had two hits for the Warriors. Each of the top four batters in AU's lineup had one hit, while the bottom five hitters went a combined 0-for-14.
