Four Warriors scored in double figures.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (10-8 overall, 4-6 GLIAC) notched a 74-64 home court victory over Saginaw Valley State (8-10 overall, 4-6 GLIAC) at the Matthaei on Saturday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
In back-and-forth action there were four lead changes in the first 2:56 of the contest.  The Cardinals had a two-point advantage (10-8), but a layup by senior Sadia Johnson (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Central) tied the score at the 6:13 mark.  During a 2:50 scoring drought for WSU, the Cardinals tallied just two points (12-10).  A pair of free throws by senior Alex Matus (Millbury, Ohio / Toledo Central Catholic) tied the score once again with 3:23 on the clock.  SVSU snapped the 12-12 deadlock with a triple by Maddie Maloney.  Sophomore Kate Sherwood (Canton, Mich. / Belleville) contributed two points from the foul line, but Saginaw Valley State responded with another three pointer.  WSU trailed 18-14 at the end of the first period.

The Green and Gold regained the lead with a seven-point spurt (21-18).  During this time, Sherwood recorded four points, along with a triple by freshman Rebecca Fugate (Holly, Mich.).  SVSU made a jumper at the 6:11 mark before both sides went cold for the next 2:38.  Junior Tori Perez (Belleville, Mich.) ended the scoring drought with two points from the charity stripe giving the hosts a 23-20 advantage.  Fugate extended the lead to six points after a basket from long distance, but the Cardinals made back-to-back layups to pull within two at 26-24.  WSU went on a six-point run over the next 35 seconds to lead 32-24 at the 1:27 mark.  Each team made two free throws to conclude the half.  The Warriors led 34-26 at halftime.

Over the initial 2:66 of the second half, the Warriors outscored Saginaw Valley State, 6-2, including a long distance-bucket from Alex Matus.  The Cardinals tallied five straight points, but Fugate responded with a basket from beyond the arc with 5:35 on the clock to regain a double-digit lead at 43-33.  During the next 3:35, the Green and Gold limited Saginaw Valley State to only free throws while tallying five points for a 48-38 lead at the 2:24 mark.  SVSU's Kaitlyn Zarycki made a layup at the 1:58 mark, before a six-point WSU spurt to finish the third period for a 14-point margin (54-40) after 30 minutes.

Fugate opened the final quarter with a conventional three-point play.  Saginaw Valley State scored two points from the foul line, but Sherwood would give the Green and Gold its largest lead (18 points) at 60-42.  The teams exchanged a bucket before a six-point run by the Cardinals cut the Wayne State advantage to 12 at 62-50.  The Warriors only allowed SVSU free throws over the next 4:43, scoring seven points in the process for a 69-55 advantage.  Back-to-back baskets by Saginaw Valley State were answered with a three pointer by sophomore Grace George (DeWitt, Mich.) at the 1:12 mark to extend the lead to 13 (72-59).  SVSU drained its own bucket from beyond the arc with 48 seconds on the clock.  Senior Nastassja Chambers (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Arbor Prep) tallied the final two Warrior points from the foul line, before a Cardinal layup to end the contest.  Wayne State edged SVSU, 74-64.
