Boxscore

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team won its fifth straight contest Thursday with a 70-66 victory over GLIAC foe Hillsdale. The Warriors (7-3 overall, 5-1 GLIAC) haven't dropped a contest since losing to No. 1 Ashland on Dec. 5.

Senior forward Phaebre Colbert (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Forest Hills Northern) scored a team-high 19 points and pulled down nine rebounds for the Warriors. Senior forward Talisha Bridges (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Loy Norrix) added 15 points and 10 rebounds, including eight offensive boards. It's the sixth straight game that Bridges has scored in double figures.

WSU jumped out to a lead early against the Chargers. Brittany Streetman (Warren, Mich. / Lincoln), making her first career start, made two free throws to open the scoring. Junior guard Lena Thomas (Bloomfield Twp., Mich. / Bloomfield Hills Andover) followed with a pair of triples to give Wayne State an early 8-0 lead.

Hillsdale (4-6 overall, 1-6 GLIAC) then went on a 8-0 run of its own on two Lea Jones' three-pointers and a Megan Fogt layup to tie the game at 8-8. The game was back and forth for much of the first half. Wayne State held a slim 29-28 halftime advantage.

The Chargers scored the first four points of the second half on buckets by Fogt and Jones, but Streetman answered with a three-pointer to tie the game at 32-32. The lead for either side would be no more than four points until 9:24 remaining when Colbert made two free throws to give WSU a 50-45 advantage.

Colbert followed her free throws with a conventional three-point play on the next offensive possession and Talisha Bridges drained two more free throws to give WSU a 55-45 lead with 8:22 remaining.

The Warriors maintained at least a seven-point edge throughout most of the second half, leading by as much as 12 points when senior center Juanita Cochran (Saginaw, Mich. / Arthur Hill) connected on a jumper to give WSU a 65-53 lead with 3:09 left to play in the game.

Hillsdale continued to chip away at the lead and two made free throws by Lea Jones pulled the Chargers to within four points, 66-62, with just 38 seconds to play. HC would get no closer than four points, however. Freshman guard Kristen Long (Corunna, Mich. / Durand) and Cochran each made single free throws and Colbert made a pair of shots at the charity stripe in the final minute to help clinch the victory.

Thomas and Streetman each scored eight points for Wayne State. Cochran tallied five points, nine rebounds and two blocks.

Jones scored a game-high 22 points, sinking 4-of-5 three-pointers, to lead Hillsdale. Fogt added 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Chargers.

Wayne State returns to action at 3 p.m. on Saturday hosting Findlay at the Matthaei.
