Fugate scored a team-best 20 points.

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (16-11 overall, 9-9 GLIAC) closed out the regular season with a 77-72 setback at Saginaw Valley State University (10-18 overall, 7-11 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon.  WSU earned the No. 6 seed for the upcoming GLIAC tournament and will play a quarterfinal contest on Wednesday (March 6th) at Northern Michigan with opening tip-off slated for 5:30 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The Warriors started strong scoring the first five points on a triple by junior Alyssa Leister (St. Louis, Mich. / Alma) and a lay-up by senior Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.).  Wayne State had an 13-4 advantage following a free throw, a jumper and a triple by Fugate, along with a bucket by junior Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center).

A shot from beyond the arc by freshman McKenna Ferguson (Grandville, Mich. / Byron Center) ended a 6-0 spurt by the Cardinals and extended WSU's lead to 16-10.  SVSU tallied four of the final seven points of the stanza to cut the Warriors margin to five (19-14) after 10 minutes.

Second Quarter
Saginaw Valley scored the first six points of the second period, all from the charity stripe, to take a 20-19 lead.  A lay-up by Leister ended a five minute scoring drought by Wayne State.

The lead changed hands three times in less than a minute with SVSU's Lydia Meredith making a lay-up to start a 6-0 run by the Cardinals.  Tripp scored five of the next seven points to cut the WSU deficit to two (30-28) with just over three minutes remaining before intermission.

Four different Warriors scored over the final 170 seconds putting the visitors in front 36-34 at halftime.

Third Quarter
Saginaw Valley tallied four of the first five points of the second half as WSU did not make a field goal for the first 3:45, until sophomore Mackenzie Miller (Schoolcraft, Mich.) scored from inside to put WSU ahead 39-38.

After four consecutive points by the hosts, Fugate drained another triple to knot the game at 42-42 just past the mid-point of the period.

A conventional three-point play by senior Kate McArthur (Warren, Mich. / Cousino) tied the game at 45-45.  Following six straight points by the Cardinals, freshman Annabel Ayrault (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) connected from beyond the arc.  SVSU out-scored WSU 5-4 over the final 2:30 of the quarter to lead 56-52 heading into the final period.

Fourth Quarter
Saginaw Valley pushed its advantage to eight (60-52) as Wayne State did not score for the first 2:40 of the final stanza.  Senior ZaMaria Polk (Detroit, Mich. / Mumford) split a pair from charity stripe, before sophomore Gabi Lutchka (Grass Lake, Mich.) made two foul shots, and a jumper and free throw by Ferguson made it a two-point contest (60-58) with 6:21 left.

A lay-up by Fugate completed the 8-0 spurt by the Warriors.  Polk tied the game at both 62-62 (on a jumper) and 64-64 (on two free throws).

After four consecutive points by the Cardinals, Fugate made two foul shots with 2:21 left to pull WSU within two (68-66). SVSU's Aleshia Jones made five free throws and Meredith made four foul shots in the final 90 seconds to secure the win for Saginaw Valley as the Warriors made two triples (Fugate and Lutchka) in the final 35 seconds to keep it interesting.
