Baseball Earns Split with Sioux Falls

The Warriors won game one 9-2.

DAVENPORT, Fla. -- The Wayne State University baseball team (8-4) split with Sioux Falls (7-7) on Saturday.  WSU won game one 9-2 but lost game two 4-1.

GAME ONE (W, 9-2)
HOW IT HAPPENED
An error opened the door for the Warriors in the top of the second inning and back-to-back singles from Davis Graham (Grosse Pointe, Mich. / Grosse Pointe South) and Noah Miller (Macomb, Mich. / University Liggett) produced a run.  Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) sent a two-run double into right field but was thrown out trying for a triple, giving WSU a 3-0 advantage.

A two-out walk followed by a double in the bottom of the second put the Cougars on the board.  USF trimmed WSU's lead to 3-2 with an RBI groundout in the bottom of the third inning.

Nate Roede (Byron Center, Mich.) walked to start the fourth inning and Jacoby Dale (Roseville, Mich.) singled into right field before Brett Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich.) bunted both runners over.  A wild pitch allowed WSU to extend its lead to 4-2.  Miller doubled home a run and an error on the same play allowed another run to score as WSU took a 6-2 lead.  Another wild pitch sent Miller home and the margin grew to five.

Wayne State added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning helped by an error, a walk and a wild pitch.

AT THE PLATE
Miller led the offense, going 2-for-3 with three runs scored, two RBI and a stolen base.  Foley drove in three runs.

ON THE MOUND
Kaden Stively (Washington, Mich. / Romeo) (2-0) pitched six innings and allowed two runs on three hits and a walk, while striking out six batters.

David Thurman (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Edison) allowed two hits but did not allow a run and struck out three batters in his inning of relief.

GAME TWO (L, 1-4)
HOW IT HAPPENED

A pair of doubles in the top of the third inning netted the Cougars a run and gave them a 1-0 advantage.  Later in the frame, a sacrifice fly made it 2-0, Sioux Falls.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) sent a two-out double just inside the first base bag and advanced to third base on a passed ball.  However USF escaped the inning without any damage.

Dale drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the fifth inning, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Miller to cut Sioux Falls' lead in half, 2-1.

The deficit grew to three, 4-1, as the Cougars scored twice in the top of the seventh inning.

AT THE PLATE
WSU was only able to collect five hits, and DeLanoy was the only one to hit for extra bases.

ON THE MOUND
Jimmy Love (Birmingham, Mich. / Seaholm) (1-1) had nine strikeouts in six and 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on four hits and four walks.

Joey Muzljakovich (Mayfield, Mich. / Traverse City St. Francis) was responsible for the final two outs.
