DETROIT -- After a solid second half against Lake Superior State on Thursday, the Wayne State University men's basketball team (1-4, 1-1 GLIAC) continued its improved play with a 69-59 win over Northwood (3-3, 0-2 GLIAC) on Sunday afternoon.
Gavin Toma (Troy, Mich. / Southfield Christian) scored 16 second half points to finish with a career-high 25 points to lead all scorers. Toma netted six consecutive points in the second half to stifle a Timberwolves' rally. He also drilled a three-pointer to beat the shot clock late in the contest.

Marcus Moore (Lansing, Mich. / Waverly) jumper gave the Warriors their first lead of the game at 10-9 five minutes into the contest. Northwood led 19-12 after two free throws from Maurice Jones, who lead NU with 22 points. The visitors' lead stayed at seven, 30-23, after a triple from Charlie Ryan with two minutes left before the break.
WSU ended the half on a 6-1 run to trim the deficit to 31-29.The momentum stayed with the Green & Gold in the second stanza. Less than five minutes into the second half,
Clark Bishop (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance) and
Joel Ndondo (Ajax, Ont. / Christian Faith Center Academy) collected back-to-back layups to tie the contest at 36-36.
The Timberwolves regained the lead, 39-38, at the 12:16 mark but Toma scored six straight points to give WSU a 44-39 advantage with nine minutes remaining and WSU would not look back. A Dylan Langkabel layup pulled NU within one at 48-47 with 4:39 to play but WSU would extend its lead to 56-51 on Toma's aforementioned buzzer-beater. Toma's triple began an 11-1 run by the Warriors over a two minute span that pushed the margin to 12 (64-52) with 48 seconds remaining.
Toma made four consecutive free throws sandwiched around an uncontested lay-up by Jones, who tallied seven points in the final 45 seconds.
The 10-point victory helped the Warriors collect their first overall and first GLIAC win of the season.
Bishop tallied 17 points while Ndondo finished with a career-high 12 points to go with six rebounds.
Michael Lewis (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) led WSU with seven boards.
Jones, who was 7-of-20 from the floor, led NU with 22 points, while Langkabel chipped in with 12 points, while Will Bowles grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds.
The Warriors will make the trek to the Upper Peninsula for meetings with Michigan Tech on Saturday and Northern Michigan on Monday.
