Baseball Takes Series from GVSU with Senior Day Rout

The Warriors secure the fourth seed in next week's GLIAC Tournament.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University baseball team (27-19 overall, 15-12 GLIAC) wrapped up regular season play on Sunday against Grand Valley State (27-21 overall, 15-13 GLIAC) and WSU won the series finale 12-3.  The Warriors take a series from the Lakers for the first time since 2010.  The win pushes Wayne State past GVSU for the fourth seed in next week's GLIAC Tournament and also bolsters WSU's NCAA postseason resume.

Prior to first pitch, the eight-member senior class of Patrick Adams (Detroit, Mich. / De La Salle), Brad Baldwin (Troy, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic), JT Conti (Trenton, Mich.) Nolan Dill (Bowling Green, Ohio), Taylor Horn (Leo, Ind.), Ryan Mergener (Portage, Mich. / Portage Central), Devin Rose (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Orchard Lake St. Mary's) and Jared Tobey (St. Clair, Mich.) were recognized in an on-field presentation alongside family and friends.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-  A sacrifice fly by the Lakers in the top of the first inning gave the visitors a 1-0 lead.  The Green & Gold tied the game with a run on an RBI groundout by Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) in the bottom of the third inning.

- Two hits and a walk produced a run in the top of the fourth inning, giving GVSU a 2-1 lead.  However, the Warriors answered with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 5-2 lead.  A two-hour lightning and rain delay halted progress prior to the fifth inning but WSU picked up right where it left off with three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.  A run scored on a catcher's interference call, while Tristen Jorah (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Sterling Heights Stevenson) and Rose collected RBI.

- The home advantage grew to 9-2 as Justin Kelly (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South) drove in a run with an RBI single to left field in the bottom of the sixth inning.  GVSU got a run in the top of the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly to left field.  WSU scored three runs on four hits in the bottom of the seventh inning to extend its lead to 12-3.  Rose started the scoring with an RBI single before Adams drove in a run with an RBI single to center and a bases-loaded walk to Finkbeiner concluded the offense for the frame.

AT THE PLATE
- Adams and Rose both notched three-hit games, while driving in three runs.

ON THE MOUND
- Richard Hovde (Saline, Mich.) battled through four innings, allowing two earned runs and limited the damage with some key outs.  Hunter Brown (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / Lakeview) (3-2) struck out six in three innings and did not allow a hit to pick up his third win of the season.  Addison Pawelek (Shelby Twp., Mich. / De La Salle) pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Dillon McInerney (Richmond, Mich.) worked a scoreless ninth inning.

UP NEXT
- Wayne State will meet third-seeded Ashland on Thursday at 5:30 PM at the Detroit PAL Corner Ballpark.  The complete schedule and coverage of the 2018 GLIAC Tournament can be found here.
