Men's Basketball Stifles Walsh for Ninth Straight Win

Wayne State held Walsh to their second-lowest scoring output of the season (66 points).

NORTH CANTON, Ohio -- The first-place Wayne State University men's basketball program (9-1, 6-0 GLIAC) won 75-66 at Walsh (9-4, 3-4 GLIAC) on Thursday night to extend its winning streak to nine games and remain unbeaten in league games.  The nine straight wins is the longest winning streak since 1999.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• A Michael Lewis (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) three-pointer and a Chuck Key (Detroit, Mich. / Cass Tech) layup put WSU up 5-0 after the first three minutes of action.  Marcus Moore (Lansing, Mich. / Waverly) extended the visitors' lead to 10-4 at the 14:36 mark.  A 6-0 run by Walsh tied the game at 10-10 with 12:31 left before halftime.  The Green & Gold regained the lead after another trey from Lewis at the 12-minute mark.  Back-to-back three-pointers from the Cavaliers gave them a 24-17 advantage with with six minutes remaining.  A George Spencer (Detroit, Mich. / Belleville) triple and a Key bucket pulled WSU within one at 26-25 at the 2:40 mark.  Clark Bishop (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance) gave WSU a 29-28 lead with just under a minute to play and a triple at the buzzer from Spencer gave the Warriors a 32-30 lead at halftime.

• Key put WSU up five, 37-32, early in the second half.  Two more baskets from Key powered the Warriors to a 43-35 advantage with 16 minutes left to play.    Spencer tallied four straight points to stretch WSU's lead to 47-37 with 13 minutes left to play.  A layup from Moore gave WSU a 13-point lead, 59-46, at the 9:37 mark.  An 8-0 run from Walsh trimmed Wayne State's lead to 63-57 with six minutes remaining and pulled within four after Zac Carter hit three free throws following a shooting foul at the 5:12 mark.  After Walsh cut the deficit to three, five points from Spencer put WSU up eight, 71-63, with 2:26 to play.  The Warriors continued to execute offensively to secure the 75-66 victory.

SPENCER'S SHOW
• Spencer continues to emerge as one of the better all-around players in the league.  He has been known as a defensive stopper during his first two seasons at WSU but has developed the offensive side of his game in 2016-17.  He followed up a career-high 18 points vs. Ohio Dominican on Dec. 15th with a new career-high 23 points on Thursday.

AN ELITE DEFENSE
• Walsh came into the night averaging 85.3 points per night, which ranks third in the GLIAC and WSU held the Cavaliers to 66 points, their second-lowest total of the season.  WU also ranked near the top of the league at 49.2 percent and WSU held the Cavs to 35.8 percent from the floor.  Wayne State has held opponents to 60 or fewer points on six occasions this season.

LONG-RANGE STROKE
• The Warriors connected on a season-high nine three-pointers on Thursday, including five from Spencer.
