QUINCY, Ill. -- The Wayne State University volleyball team (3-3 Overall) took its first road trip of the season on Friday to compete at the Quincy Tournament. The Warriors lost in four sets to Minnesota State-Moorhead (5-0 Overall) and also fell in four sets versus McKendree (3-3 Overall).
MATCH ONE vs. MINNESOTA STATE-MOORHEAD (L, 1-3 / 19-25, 26-24, 21-25, 17-25)
HOW IT HAPPENED

Michelle Asiedu (Holland, Ohio / Springfield) and
Natalie Breault (Bad Axe, Mich.) gave WSU an early 2-0 lead with a pair of kills to begin the first set. The two sides traded points before Asiedu tied the game at 9-9 with another kill. MSU-Moorhead led 17-13 following an attack error from
Grace Frazee (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian). The Green & Gold pulled within two points at 21-19 but the Dragons won the final four points to take set one 25-19.
- WSU led the second set 7-2 after kills from
Hannah Moore (Louisville, Ky. / Assumption) and blocks by Moore, Frazee and
Christa Raicevich (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North). The set was tied at 15-15 but two kills from
Hailey Richardson (New Boston, Mich. / Huron) made it 19-17 in favor of the Warriors. Both teams were executing down the stretch as the set was tied at 21-21, 22-22, 23-23 and 24-24. Frazee collected two blocks to give WSU a 26-24 victory and tie the match at one set apiece.
- A Dragon serving error put WSU on top 5-4 during the third set. However, MSU-Moorhead took a 12-9 advantage after a quick 3-0 run. The Warriors trailed 16-12 before finding their swing and pulling within two points, 18-16, after points from Asiedu and Moore. However, MSU-Moorhead would go on to win the set 25-21.
- Wayne State trailed 9-5 to open the fourth set after four straight aces by the Dragons, forcing head coach
Tim Koth to take a timeout. WSU stayed close after consecutive kills from Asiedu to pull the Warriors within three at 14-11. The Dragons would go on to win the set 25-17 and the match three sets to one.
LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Three Warriors finished with 10 or more kills as Richardson and Asiedu each tallied 12 kills, while Frazee collected 10. Breault notched 22 assists, while
Karen Sidge (White Lake, Mich. / Howell) added 15 assists.
Ellie Rodriguez (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Catholic Central) aided the defense with 19 digs, while Richardson also finished with 11 digs to secure a double-double.
MATCH TWO vs. MCKENDREE (L, 1-3 / 22-25, 18-25, 25-16, 17-25)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- WSU led the first set 3-1 after a pair of kills from Asiedu and a bearcat attacking error. The set was tied at 10-10 and 15-15. A 4-1 run by McKendree put the Wayne State behind at 19-16. The Warriors tied the set at 21-21 after two straight attacking errors by their opposition but the Bearcats would end the set on a 4-1 run to win 25-22.
- McKendree started the second set with a 4-1 lead and would never trail on its way to a 2-0 match lead.
- The Green & Gold regained form in the third set and led 8-4 following back-to-back kills from Richardson.
Madelyn Krenz (Chenoa, Ill. / Prairie Central) got in on the action with a kill to extend WSU's lead to 17-10. A solo block from Frazee put the Warriors up 21-12 as WSU would avoid the sweep with a 25-16 victory.
- The fourth set was tied at 5-5. A 5-0 run by McKendree put WSU behind 12-8 and the Bearcats would lead 19-14 later in the set. The Bearcats won six of the final seven points to win the set 25-17 and the match 3-1.
LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Krenz, Richardson and Moore all finished with nine kills, while Breault dished out 28 assists. Rodriguez tallied 12 digs, while
Haley Tenelshof (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Jenison) contributed 11 digs.

- Wayne State will finish the event on Saturday with two more matches at 12:30 PM ET and 5 PM ET. The Warriors meet host Quincy in the first match of the day and then Northwest Missouri State before returning to Detroit.
