LAKELAND, Fla. – The Wayne State University men's tennis team (6-5 overall) earned two singles wins and a doubles win Saturday, but fell to host Florida Southern (3-4 overall) 6-3 on Saturday.
DOUBLES RESULTS
The Warriors earned its lone doubles win at No. 3. Freshman
Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) and sophomore
Derek Sammons (Coldwater, Mich.) earned an 8-4 decision over Blaine Miller and Victor Ahlbeck.
At No. 1, sophomore
Mats Westkamp (Bonn, Germany) and junior
Taylor Vane (Southampton, England) lost 8-4 to the Mocs' Matt Matsuyama and Miguel Alvarez-Hevia.
In the second flight, junior
Griffin Mertz (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) and senior
Harvey Reed (Winchester, Hampshire, England) fell to Derek Bell and Tim Becker (8-5).
SINGLES RESULTS
Westkamp and Mertz were both winners in singles action. Westkamp claimed a 6-2, 6-4 win over Alvaro Arias at No. 1, with Mertz defeating Ahlbeck 7-6, 7-5.
At No. 2, Vane lost 6-4, 6-0 to Alvare-Hevia.
In the fourth flight, Karcz won 3-6 in the first set, but fell 6-3, 6-3 in consecutive sets to Becker.
At No. 5, Reed also earned a first set win (2-6), but Lennart Vossgaetter won 7-5, 6-1 to clinch the point.
Sammons played at No. 6, losing 6-2, 6-3 to Matt Matsuyama.

Wayne State will take a brief break on Sunday before jumping right back into action for its fourth match in five days Monday. The Warriors will travel to Saint Leo, Fla. to take on the host Lions at 11 a.m.
