Men's Tennis Advances in NCAA Midwest Regional

The second-seeded Warriors notched a 4-1 victory over No. 7-GVSU.

CLINTON TWP., Mich. -- The No. 2 seeded-Wayne State University men's tennis squad (21-3 overall) topped seventh-seeded Grand Valley State (16-9 overall), 4-1, in the first round of the 2019 NCAA Regional Tournament at the Peachtree Tennis Club on Saturday afternoon.

DOUBLES RESULTS
At No. 1 doubles, seniors Taylor Vane (Southampton, England) and Griffin Mertz (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) notched the lone WSU doubles victory (6-4) over Sebastien Lescoulie and Martin Matov.

Sophomore Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, Germany) and junior Pierre Renaudie (Sathonay-Camp, France) fell 6-4 at No. 2 doubles against Jack Geissler and DJ Colantone.

Senior Derek Sammons (Coldwater, Mich.) and freshman Donovan Nguyen (Troy, Mich. / Utica) lost their No. 3 doubles match 6-4 to Nicholas Urban and Jack Dausman.

SINGLES RESULTS
Freshman Max Rink (Wetzlar, Germany) was first off the courts at No. 5 singles after tallying a win against Nicholas Urban (6-1, 6-3).

Nguyen was next to finish at No. 6 singles, winning his match versus Eric Zwemer (6-1, 6-2).

At No. 3 singles, Vane topped Dausman after a close first set (7-5, 6-2).

Renaudie clinched the win at No. 2 singles in a third set vs. Geissler (6-1, 4-6, 6-2).

Karcz and Mertz went unfinished in their No. 1 singles and No. 4 singles matches, respectively.

UP NEXT

Second-seeded WSU will play No. 3-Drury on Sunday (11:30 a.m.) at Peachtree Tennis Club.
