Golden Bears to host Davenport in regular season finale weekend

CSP looking to snap four game losing streak at home

4.15.21

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia-St. Paul women's lacrosse team (3-5, 2-4 GLIAC) enters its final regular season weekend, hosting Davenport (6-1, 2-1 GLIAC) in the first outdoor home games of the year at Sea Foam Stadium. The Bears will face the Panthers at 5 p.m. on Friday, and 11 a.m. on Sunday.

The Golden Bears bring a seven game home winning streak to the table as they attempt to snap a four game overall losing streak. CSP will host senior day on Sunday, with two student-athletes expected to graduate and move on from the program: Valerie Bragg and Lex Siefert. The roster features two others listed as seniors, Sarah Pierson and Katie Moynihan, but COVID-19 has expanded student-athlete eligibility, providing additional opportunity to compete for those who elect to use the additional season(s).

SCHEDULE CHANGE
Friday evenings game time has been moved up to a 5 p.m. start (initially scheduled for 7 p.m.) due to recent curfew policies which have been fluid in the Twin Cities area.

ATTENDANCE POLICY
This weekend's games moving outdoors allows the lacrosse team to play in front of its home fans for the first time this season. Consistent with the CSP athletics spring spectator policies with other home events (baseball, softball, track & field), the lacrosse team will have four tickets available per student and coach while the opposing team will have two tickets per team member. Only spectators included on the pass list will be allowed admission into this weekend's games.

Face masks and social distancing will continue to be enforced, and we thank those attending this weekend's games for adhering to the policy.

GLIAC ROUNDUP
As the GLIAC season winds down, it's Northern Michigan leading the league with a 4-0 record, a half game ahead of #8 Grand Valley State (3-0) while Davenport (2-1) remains in the mix. GVSU has topped Davenport head-to-head by a slim 15-13 margin at GVSU while Grand Valley State visits Northern Michigan this weekend for a pair of pivotal league games. A strong showing for the Golden Bears this weekend will go a long way for GLIAC Tournament seeding, where the top four in the five team league make the playoffs. CSP (2-4) holds a 2-game lead over Ashland (0-6), having swept the Eagles earlier this season in the Concordia Dome. GLIAC STANDINGS

HOME SWEET DOME, HOME SWEET FOAM
Concordia enters its lone weekend outdoors at Sea Foam Stadium this weekend riding a seven game home winning streak dating back to April 20, 2019. It will be the first time CSP plays outdoors at Sea Foam Stadium since a 15-9 GLIAC Tournament quarterfinal win over Davenport on April 30, 2019. Concordia holds a 15-10 all-time home record, but is just 2-4 outdoors at Sea Foam Stadium.

SERIES HISTORY: CSP 5, DAVENPORT 0
Concordia is unbeaten in five prior contests against Davenport, the first four coming in GLIAC play with the most recent meeting being a GLIAC Tournament contest. CSP is 2-0 at home, 2-0 on the road and 1-0 at a neutral site against the Panthers. CSP has hosted Davenport outdoors at Sea Foam Stadium once, in the most recent playoff game on April 30, 2019, a 15-9 Golden Bear win in the program's first-ever postseason contest.

In the all-time series, Concordia has scored at least 12 goals in every meeting and has allowed double-digit goals to Davenport just once in a 21-16 CSP win in 2018 at the West St. Paul Dome. Four of the five meetings have been decided by six goals or less, and the largest margin of victory was a 9-goal win by CSP on April 2018, 2019 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

SEIFERT AMONG GLIAC ASSIST LEADERS
Among the GLIAC individual leaderboard, senior Lex Seifert sits fourth in assists with 12 which is tied for the seventh most in a season in team history and her 1.50 per game average though eight games is ahead of her own record pace from last year (1.29) in seven games. An elite distributor, Seifert has dished out 26 assists across 41 career games and ranks sixth in program history for her career total. Her five assists in a win over Colorado Mesa in 2020 are still a school record, and she had a career high seven point game in a win over Ashland this year. In parts of two shortened seasons in 2020 and 2021, she's racked up 21 assists in 15 games. Her sophomore year was her most efficient scoring season with 13 goals in 18 games, and she's added 34 career ground balls, 35 draw controls and 18 caused turnovers.

BRAGG A KEY DEFENDER AT CSP
Joining the Golden Bears for her junior in 2020 after a strong start to her career at Wilmington University, Valerie Bragg was a key defensive cog the past two seasons. An important defensive reserve last year as a newcomer, she played key minutes on a defensive line that included a starting lineup comprised of all three and four year starters, helping the team to a 5-2 record before the shutdown.

She's claimed a starting role as a senior, contributing seven ground balls and ranking sixth in the GLIAC with eight caused turnovers on the back line, while adding five draw controls in the middle. Prior to Concordia, she had appeared in 36 games for Wilmington, starting 18 of 19 as a sophomore, finishing third on the team with 21 caused turnovers and fourth on the team with 33 ground balls. In her four year career, she's compiled 59 ground balls and 44 caused turnovers in 51 games.

PIERSON A FORCE ON THE DRAW
Senior Sarah Pierson has been a force in the middle, ranking third in the league with 54 draw controls while accumulating 94 in two seasons with CSP and topping the 200 mark for her career including her two seasons from St. Leo. For her career, in just 15 games she's already in third on the career charts at CSP, just 12 shy of second and 15 away from the career record.

She's 22 draw controls shy of the program's single season record, a remarkable feat in just eight games as the record was achieved by Lexi Stanley in 2019 in 18 games (76). Pierson's 6.75 draws per game this year and 5.71 last year in seven games are the top two seasons by average in program history.

She's more than a draw specialist, too, already ranking in the program's top-10 with 26 career goals in just 15 games played. She was second on the team with 16 goals in seven games last year, and this year is tied for second with 10.

Pierson also ranks 10th in the GLIAC with 14 ground balls on the season, second on the team only to goalie Maddy Huebner.

MOYNIHANS TEAM UP
Sisters Katie Moynihan and Molly Moynihan have been a solid combination for the Golden Bears over the last two years, among the team's top offensive threats.

Katie, the older Golden Bear, has played in 50 career games and is the lone remaining member of the inaugural recruiting class. She's topped 10-plus goals in four straight years, compiled 44 career goals and 55 points to rank fourth in team history.

Molly is in her second year on the field and has already racked up 28 points on 18 goals and 10 assists in just 14 games the last two years. She leads the team and is 13th in the conference with 19 points and is seventh in the league with eight assists.

The Moynihan has combined for 21 goals, led by Molly's 11 while Katie is tied with Pierson for second on the team with 10, and Molly is second on the team with eight assists. Molly adds 10 draw controls and nine ground balls, as well.
