BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (19-5, 16-4 GLIAC) traveled to Ferris State (8-13, 8-11 GLIAC) on Thursday evening and were unable to overcome a 50-point second half from the Bulldogs powering FSU to a 85-77 victory. Ferris State shot 62.1 percent (18-29) in the second half and missed just one free throw (11-12).
The Warriors had an opportunity to take a share of the GLIAC title with Michigan Tech's 80-58 loss at Northwood. The celebration will have to wait.
Ferris State started quickly and led 13-5 at the 13:58 mark. The Bulldogs' lead remained at eight points following a layup from April Watson.
Jackie Jones (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) capped a 7-0 Warrior run to give the Warriors a 26-23 lead with 6:31 left before halftime.
WSU continued to lead after an
Imari Redfield (Detroit, Mich. / Country Day) layup, giving the Warriors a 34-27 advantage with 3:27 to play. Another Redfield bucket as time expired in the first half sent the teams to the locker room with the Green & Gold leading 41-35.
Shareta Brown (Pontiac, Mich. / Grand Blanc) led all scorers in the first half with 10 points and pulled down seven rebounds. 22 of FSU's 35 first-half points came off the bench.
The Warriors led 54-45 at the 14:05 mark after a layup from Jones. However, the Bulldogs would go on a 9-0 run to tie the game at 54-54 at the 10:32 mark after a layup from Kara Hess. Neither team led by more than three as the second half drew to a close. Redfield connected on two free throws to give WSU a 60-58 lead with 8:14 to play.
A clutch three-pointer from Sarah DeShone at the 4:56 mark gave FSU a 67-64 lead. A three-point play from Brown cut the deficit to 79-75 with just over a minute to play but FSU would use free throws to pull off the upset, winning 85-77.
Four Warriors scored in double-figures led by Brown's 19 points. Brown also pulled down 15 rebounds to collect her 14th double-double of the season. Redfield scored 15 points while Jones added 12 and
Kayla Bridges (Canton, Mich. / Canton) scored 11 points. Jones also handed out eight assists.
DeShone led four Bulldogs in double figures with 16 points.
Wayne State returns to Midtown on Saturday against Grand Valley at 1 PM. That contest will be the final regular season television broadcast on Comcast CN 900.
