DETROIT -- The Wayne State University baseball team (27-22, 19-13 GLIAC) still had plenty to play for on Sunday after clinching a playoff berth with Saturday's game one victory. With two wins, WSU could secure the No. 3 seed but Malone (26-22, 18-12 GLIAC) could clinch that spot with a split and that is exactly what happened. Similar to Saturday's victory, the Warriors won game one in walk off fashion, 4-3, before the Pioneers took game two 6-2 powered by a six-run fourth inning.
Wayne State recognized its three seniors,
Alex Kinch (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer),
Aaron Loconsole (Macomb, Mich. / Marine City), and
Daniel Peake (Mississauga, Ont. / Lorne Park) prior to the first pitch of game two.
GAME ONE vs. MALONE (W, 4-3)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Three first-inning hits produced a run for Malone and the Pioneers added a run in the second inning with an RBI single up the middle. WSU went down in order in second and third innings. In the bottom of the fourth inning,
Griffin Harms (Bingham Farms, Mich. / Birmingham Groves) sent a one-out single into center and
JT Conti (Trenton, Mich.) followed with an infield single.
Ryan Mergener (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Portage Central) singled to center field and an error by the center fielder allowed Harms to head home for WSU's first run of the day.
- The Green & Gold took a 3-2 lead with two runs on two hits in the bottom of the sixth inning. Harms was hit by a pitch to begin the rally and Conti doubled to left center, tying the game at 2-2. A sacrifice fly from Mergener put the home team up 3-2. Malone answered with a run in the top of the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly.
-
Cole Clifton (Sterling Heights. Mich. / De La Salle) came off the bench to pinch hit and drew a four-pitch walk. A throwing error allowed
Justin Sherman (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer) to reach on a sacrifice bunt. After a fly out,
Sean Winkelseth (Ypsilanti, Mich.) moved everyone up a base with a single to the left side. Harms came through with a sacrifice fly RBI to secure the 4-3 win.
LEADING THE WARRIORS
- The two, three and four hitters in Wayne State lineup (Winkelseth, Harms and Conti) combined to go 6-for-9 with two RBI and three runs scored.
ON THE MOUND
- Kinch (8-4) performed well on his Senior Day, allowing two earned runs and notching his 10th career complete game and striking out nine batters.
GAME TWO vs. MALONE (L, 2-6)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams were quiet until Winkelseth singled home a run in the bottom of the third inning. MU scored six runs on three hits including a Grand Slam from Keanan Locke in the top of the fourth inning to take a 6-1 lead.
- A fielding error in the bottom of the fifth allowed Sherman to score and trim the deficit to 6-2. WSU put two runners on in the bottom of the sixth inning but were unable to do any damage. In the bottom of the eighth inning,
Justin Kelly (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South) singled to right to begin the inning and
Jared Tobey (St. Clair, Mich.) reached via an error. After a pop out and a fly out Clifton was called on again to pinch hit. He drew a walk to load the bases but Mergener flied out to center field to end the threat.
Tyler Tompson (Farmington, Mich.) and
Taylor Horn (Leo, Ind.) kept MU quiet in the top of the ninth inning. Winkelseth grounded out to second to start the final frame but Harms reached on a walk. Conti grounded out sharply to shortstop and the Pioneers turned the double play to secure the win and lay claim to the No. 3 seed in the upcoming GLIAC Tournament.
LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Winkelseth and Kelly both collected two-hit games.
ON THE MOUND
