UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The Wayne State University volleyball team (5-6, 2-1) dropped its first GLIAC match of the season at Saginaw Valley (6-5, 1-2) on Friday night. The Cardinals took set one 25-21 before the Warriors tied the match with a 25-21 set-two victory. SVSU won the next two sets, 25-22 and 25-21 to collect its first GLIAC win of the season.

SVSU led set one 11-8 and extended its lead to 18-13 following a WSU service error. Back-to-back Cardinal errors capped a 5-0 Warrior run to tie the set at 18-18. Wayne State took a 21-20 lead after a kill from Madison Reeves (Indianapolis, Ind. / Avon). WSU could only muster one more point and SVSU took the opening set 25-22.

A service ace gave the Warriors an 8-2 advantage to begin set two. Candice Ottey (Ajax, Ont.) tallied a kill before a SVSU attack error and another Warrior ace to extend the lead to 12-4. The Cardinals cut the deficit to two at 15-13. Kelsey Bonewits (Griffith, Ind.) collected a kill to make it 20-16 in favor of the Green & Gold. Back-to-back SVSU attack errors would end the set and give WSU a 25-21 victory.

The third set was close throughout. The two teams were tied at 10-10 and 13-13 before SVSU would gain control at 20-17 and win the set 25-22.

The Cardinals would take another back-and-forth affair during the final set to win the match three games to one. A Heather Weiss (Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Port Huron) kill would pull the Warriors within two at 12-10. That would be as close as WSU would get as the Cardinals would extend their lead to 18-13 before taking the set, 25-21.

Current GLIAC South Division Player of the Week Kristen Bulkiewicz (LaSalle, Ont. / Sandwich) collected her fourth consecutive and 27th career double-double with 15 kills and 11 digs. Bonewits finished with 12 kills while Macy Steenhuysen (Grand Rapids, Mich. / East Kentwood) led the defense with 19 digs. Reeves distributed 42 assists on the night.

SVSU hit .236 compared to WSU's .182 hitting percentage. The Warriors collected 12 total team blocks.

WSU will look to rebound on Saturday at Lake Superior at 2 PM.
