The Malone University women's basketball team (4-1,1-1 GLIAC) used a balanced offensive scoring attack to defeat the Northern Michigan University Wildcats 64-56 on Saturday afternoon at Osborne Hall, marking the first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) victory in program history.
Nine players scored for Malone, five players recorded at least nine points and three scored in double figures. Forward
Tara Schaffter led the way, netting a team-high 11 points, while guard
Sydnee Penn and forward
Deborah Simmers each added 10. Guard
Selana Reale finished with a game-high 13 rebounds to go along with nine points.
Northern Michigan (4-2, 1-1 GLIAC) opened the game on a 10-2 spurt but Malone clawed its way back into it, taking a 28-27 lead into halftime thanks in large part to sharp shooting from Schaffter and Simmers.
The score remained tight for the first half of the second stanza until the Pioneers reeled off a 17-3 run to up the lead from 39-37 to 56-40 in a span of just five minutes. The Pioneers hit on seven of their eight field goal attempts during the spurt, including all three of their three-point attempts.
Northern Michigan's Alyssa Colla was the high scorer in the game with 15 followed by Abbey Debruin's 12.
Malone shot 42.6% (20 of 47) for the game and 42.9% (six of 14) from downtown. The Pioneers' defensive effort was equally as impressive, forcing 19 turnovers while holding the Wildcats to just 31.6% (18 of 57) shooting from the floor and 21.7% (five of 23) from three-point range.
Malone will next travel to Lake Superior State (MI) University (1-5 overall, 0-2 GLIAC) for a bout against the Lakers on Thursday, Dec. 6th at 7:30 p.m.
