Women's Hoops Begins Regular Season With 77-59 Victory

Brown, Lavita-Stephens and Machado combine for 46 points.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball began the 2014-15 campaign with a decisive 77-59 triumph over the University of Indianapolis Friday night at the Matthaei.

The Warriors came out firing on all cylinders opening up a 14-point advantage (21-7) just over nine minutes into the contest.  Sophomore Gabby Machado (Pontiac, Mich. / Northern) scored the first four points of the game and senior Shareta Brown (Pontiac, Mich. / Grand Blanc) scored on a jumper before UIndy's Princess German drained a triple at the 17:23 mark.

Junior Destiny Lavita-Stephens (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Goodrich) connected from downtown with 16:15 left, her first of four opening half three pointers.  After a lay-up by Greyhound Carly Lythjohan, WSU went on a 10-0 run in a span of 2:20.  Lavita-Stephens hit two more triples, Brown added a bucket on an offensive put back and senior McKenzie Kudron (New Boston, Mich. / Huron) scored on a baseline jumper.

Lythjohan ended WSU's scoring spree with a three pointer, but on the ensuing possession junior Brittany Streetman (Warren, Mich. / Lincoln) contributed her own triple.  Following a pair of free throws by UIndy's Mariah Weddle, Wayne State went on a 15-5 run over the next five minutes with five different players scoring.  The spurt concluded on back-to-back three pointers by Streetman and junior Kristen Long (Corunna, Mich. / Durand), which increased the home team's margin to 22 (39-17) with 4:45 remaining before intermission.

The Greyhounds ended the half on a 10-7 run to pull within 19 at 46-27.  WSU shot 58 percent (19-of-33) from the floor in the opening 20 minutes, including 7-of-11 from beyond the arc.  Lavita-Stephens totaled 12 points on four triples, while Brown collected 10 points and six rebounds.  UIndy was 8-of-24 on field goals in the first half, but 8-of-9 from the charity stripe.  German led the visitors with seven points prior to halftime.

In the first 5:30 of the second half, the Warriors outscored the Greyhounds 15-2 for a 32-point advantage at 61-29.  Machado tallied 10 points, while Lavita-Stephens added her fifth triple and Brown chipped in with a jumper.

The lead was still 32 (72-40) with 8:09 left following a conventional three-point play by senior Amber McCann (Southfield, Mich. / Southfield-Lathrup).  UIndy ended the contest on a 19-5 run.

Brown notched her 48t career double-double with 12 points along with game-high totals of 16 rebounds and three steals.  Machado and Lavita-Stephens tied for game-best scoring honors with 17 points apiece.  Senior Jackie Jones (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) posted nine points, while Streetman finished with eight off the bench.

German led UIndy with 16 points and Lythjohan added 14 points and a team-high six rebounds.

Wayne State finished the game by shooting 53 percent (29-of-55), while holding the Greyhounds to 35 percent (18-of-52).  UIndy was a stellar 81 percent (17-of-21) from the foul line but was just 6-of-20 from three-point range.

The Warriors led in points in the paint 34-20, points off turnovers 15-9, second-chance points 15-5 and bench scoring 20-13.

Wayne State will play host to Michigan-Dearborn on Tuesday (Nov. 18) at 7 p.m. following the junior varsity contest against Siena Heights J.V. squad.
