DETROIT -- The Wayne State University baseball team (15-7, 4-3 GLIAC) hosted Saginaw Valley (4-12, 1-5 GLIAC) on Sunday for its home openers. The Warriors thumped the Cardinals in game one 15-0 and used a late rally to take game two, 3-1. WSU snapped a three-game losing streak in the process.

Kyle Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich.) (3-2) allowed just one hit over six innings and struck out four in the opener. Alex Kinch (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer) (3-1) pitched a complete game to deliver the Sunday sweep, allowing one unearned run and striking out four.

Game One (W, 15-0)
The Green & Gold jumped all over the visiting Cardinals to start game one. WSU scored four runs on three hits and a SVSU error in the bottom of the first inning. Eric Cunningham (LaSalle, Ont. / St. Thomas of Villanova), Zach Johnson (Grandville, Mich.) and Chris Gebara (Troy, Mich.) all collected RBI in the frame.

Another Cardinals' error allowed WSU to take a 5-0 lead in the second inning. SVSU was able to keep WSU quiet in the bottom of the third inning but that would be the only frame they completed that task.

Cameron Walker (Clinton Twp., Mich. / De La Salle) drove in a run in the fourth inning with a single up the middle and Johnson followed with a sacrifice fly to center field.

The biggest inning of the contest came in the fifth inning for WSU as five runs scored on just one hit. SVSU issued four walks and plunked two Warrior batters. Johnson doubled to right center for his third and fourth RBI of the game.

WSU scored three more runs in the sixth inning on three hits and a SVSU error. Johnson drove in his fifth run of the game on a groundout while Jimmy Jackson (Battle Creek, Mich. / Pennfield) also drove in two runs in the inning.

Brock Bates (Delta, Ohio / Evergreen) collected the final three outs for WSU in the seventh inning to seal the win.

Game Two (W, 3-1)
SVSU jumped out to a 1-0 lead thanks to a Warrior error in the second inning.

Both teams traded zeros until WSU began to apply pressure in the bottom of the sixth inning. Cunningham began the frame with a single up the middle and then stole second base. Zimmerman advanced Cunningham to third on a groundout to shortstop. Walker tied the game with a RBI-single to center field.

Walker kept the pressure on as he too stole second and third base, scoring on a throwing error charged to the SVSU catcher. Jackson collected the insurance run with an RBI-double into center field.

Kinch stayed in the game and made quick work of the Cardinals in the seventh inning. The gem was Kinch's second career complete game.

WSU will travel to Malone for a three-game series on Tuesday and Wednesday.
